About The Position

iQ Academy, Los Angeles delivers online/virtual home based instruction to K-12 students in California. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are still required to complete approximately 4-6 hours of coursework daily and log attendance. K12, inc. is our curriculum provider. Virtual schools are new models in public education. They look both backward to what we know works well in educating children, and forward to see how technology can help us implement these strategies with children. Virtual school teachers are part of a pioneering effort. Our teachers and staff, therefore, need to share the school’s pioneering mission and approach. Virtual school counselors are part of a pioneering effort. Our counselors, therefore, need to share the school’s pioneering mission and approach. The Guidance Counselor is responsible for providing support for the school's comprehensive guidance plan. The counselor advises students to manage personal conduct, helps students identify post-secondary and career goals, ensure students are properly placed in classes needed for graduation, and guides students towards making appropriate choices. The counselor works with the teachers to maintain a positive learning experience and encourage parent involvement in the student education. The Guidance Counselor works with Middle and High School students.

Requirements

  • Strong content and subject-matter knowledge
  • Ability to support and guide adults, as well as students

  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and Outlook, PowerPoint and experience using them in a professional capacity

  • Proficient with the Graduation Requirements
  • Familiar with scheduling students into classes
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings
  • Attend in-person training as scheduled
  • Pupil Personnel Service Credential
  • Must hold a valid Pupil Personnel Service Credential in School Counseling
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience using a student information system and/or other type of database software
  • Experience moderating web meetings (Blackboard Collaborate, Webinar, Webex) for small and large groups

Responsibilities

  • Assist pupils in choosing courses of study best suited to their goals, aptitudes and interests
  • Review transcripts to ensure students are placed in their proper educational program
  • Contact school districts if more information on new/entering students is needed
  • Annually review each student’s educational progress and career plans, with students individually or in small groups
  • Meet with students individually or in small groups to reinforce their educational plan as it relates to career interests, life skills, and world of work
  • Help students identify career and post-secondary goals through the 4-Year Plan
  • Work with students and their college applications and help identify their post-secondary goals
  • Consult and work in areas of curriculum development with administration and teachers, especially regarding VHS curriculum and requirements
  • Consult with teachers periodically about scheduling, student educational concerns or learning problems and new curriculum standards
  • Consult with and help support homeroom teachers during the 4 Year Plan process
  • Hold Professional Developments if needed
  • Consult with teachers on ways to integrate career interests with education and to help document for each student those activities related to life skills and the world of work
  • Help each student, through the counseling relationship, better understand him or herself, develop personal decision-making competencies, and resolve special problems
  • Organize and develop the guidance program
  • Do research on testing and curriculum and interpret these results to students and teachers (when necessary)
  • Assist with testing, assessment, and interpreting results
  • Advise school personnel regarding the need for mental health counseling for pupils
  • Maintain documented files on all activities pertaining to students and records of formalized conferences with teachers and parents
  • Collect, disseminate, and interpret education and occupational information that is current
  • Provide information to students about schools of higher learning, schools of technical training, internships, apprenticeships, and workplace opportunities
  • Attend mandatory training and regularly attends supervision meetings
  • Attends other training and in-services as needed to maintain a level of expertise in the field
  • Any additional duties assigned by the Academic Administrator or designee
  • Other duties as assigned
