About The Position

The JCYC Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program, a TRiO project administered by the U.S. Department of Education, aims to support income-eligible youth, aged 11 and older, who have the potential to be the first in their family to attend college. The program assists middle and high school students in continuing their education and graduating, and encourages enrollment in four-year institutions. The Educational Advisor will be responsible for recruiting, identifying, selecting, and counseling participants at PHILIP AND SALA BURTON ACADEMIC HIGH SCHOOL within the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Some experience working with youth
  • Strong organizational and follow-through skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience with conducting presentations and activity planning
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer Literate; Working proficiency in MS Word and Excel; knowledgeable in using PowerPoint, Zoom, and Google Applications.
  • Experience with diverse student populations
  • Knowledge of community activities, resources, and programs for youth in San Francisco
  • Ability to work cooperatively with secondary school faculty and community agency personnel

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, identify, and select participants based on income eligibility, potential for first-generation college attendance, and interest in post-secondary education.
  • Assess and determine participants’ educational needs and academic potential.
  • Provide college and career counseling to individuals and groups to encourage secondary school completion and post-secondary enrollment.
  • Coordinate and implement local and long-distance field trips, including college campus and career field trips.
  • Assist in organizing and attending overnight trips as needed.
  • Assist participants in applying for re-admission to secondary schools.
  • Refer participants to appropriate social service and government agencies.
  • Advocate for participants with secondary schools for re-enrollment and retention.
  • Advocate for admission to post-secondary schools.
  • Advocate with financial aid resource agencies to obtain assistance for participants.
  • Present financial aid and college information presentations upon request.
  • Actively recruit students and assist in implementing community events.
  • Recruit and manage a caseload of 200+ students, organizing required program documents and data into complete files.
  • Assist with the implementation and evaluation of project activities.
  • Support high school counseling staff and collaborate on events that complement the ETS program timeline.
  • Provide assistance, support, and resources for other JCYC College Access Programs and the Middle School ETS program.
  • Participate in ETS and/or JCYC meetings, activities, committees, conferences, retreats, etc., as appropriate.
  • Participate in advocacy initiatives prioritized by JCYC.
  • Perform related duties as needed.
