About The Position

Powertech’s High Current Lab provides low voltage AC and DC continuous current testing and accuracy testing on utility and industrial equipment in accordance with national and international standards. The laboratory specializes in evaluation and failure analysis of high-current components including switchgear, fuses, connectors, transformers, cables and bus. The lab’s experienced team of engineers and technicians regularly performs temperature rise testing, connector testing, and instrument transformer tests. The High Current Lab team also supports Powertech's High Power Lab, the largest grid-connected short-circuit testing facility in North America. The High Power Lab is responsible for fault current testing services including fault-interrupting tests, arc-resistance tests, short-time current tests.

Requirements

  • Good working knowledge of how to prepare tests for a variety of electrical components and cables.
  • Good working knowledge of electrical analysis procedures, testing standards and quality assurance principles.
  • Working knowledge of how to calibrate and troubleshoot related instrumentation.
  • Good knowledge of related testing standards and procedures.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Ability to modify existing test methods to perform unique tests or achieve different results.
  • Ability to demonstrate and train technical staff of specific testing techniques.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Basic report writing skills.
  • Basic knowledge of related safety and WHMIS regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 30lbs on an occasional to regular basis.
  • Ability to use hand tools and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
  • Ability to stand and work on feet for extended periods during testing and setup activities.
  • Certificate of Technology from an Institute of Technology in Electronics (power/control option), Electrical, Power, Telecommunications, Instrumentation or Automation disciplines with preference given to the discipline directly relating to the position or lab.
  • Two (2) years of related experience working in a lab setting up and performing tests on a variety of electrical equipment, components, and cables.
  • Pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre-condition to employment.
  • Maintain your Driver's License (Class 5) in good standing.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of set ups and tests on electrical equipment, components and cables
  • Sets up and carries out electrical tests under the supervision of an engineer or technologist.
  • Performs laboratory measurements following established procedures and records the results.
  • Operates computers and test instruments as required for testing.
  • Performs routine repairs, maintenance and calibration of electrical test equipment, tools and instruments.
  • Builds or modifies test jigs and support structures to be used for electrical tests.
  • Specifies and purchases materials and equipment needed for routine operation of electrical test labs.
  • Maintains test facilities in a safe and organized condition.
  • Maintains log books and files to document tests performed, operating procedures, equipment calibration, etc.
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job. This includes the performance of duties across disciplines in a job of the same or lower job group.
