About The Position

Nova Scotia Health is seeking a full-time Hematopathologist for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital (CBRH) in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This role requires FRCPC certification or equivalent. General pathologists with FRCPC certification and additional training or interest in Hematopathology are also encouraged to apply. CBRH is a major hospital in Nova Scotia, offering a wide range of services including an expanded Cancer Care center. The successful candidate will oversee laboratory hematology/transfusion services for the Eastern Zone of Nova Scotia, with CBRH serving as the referral center. This position offers opportunities for academic collaboration with the Central Zone Division of Hematopathology. The role may be based in Halifax with responsibilities for Eastern Zone patients. An additional opportunity exists for leadership roles such as Department Head or Associate Dept. Head within the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, though this is not a requirement for the Hematopathologist position.

Requirements

  • Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
  • Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), or proof of alternative coverage.
  • FRCPC or equivalent in Hematopathology OR FRCP in General Pathology with additional Training (or willingness to train) in Hematopathology.

Responsibilities

  • Medical oversight of hematopathology/transfusion medicine services for Eastern Zone of Nova Scotia, in collaboration with Operations Managers.
  • Collaboration and coordination with the Central Zone Division of Hematopathology.
  • Interpretation of Peripheral Blood Smears.
  • Participation in the Provincial Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Committees.
  • Operating within the Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of Nova Scotia Health Authority.
  • Participating in quality improvement and evaluation activities.
