About The Position

Davis School Chicago is seeking a passionate, part-time Hebrew Teacher to join their founding faculty in fall 2027. This role focuses on making Modern Hebrew a living language at the school, emphasizing real spoken proficiency, Israeli culture, and joy in learning. The teacher will be responsible for delivering engaging, rigorous, and student-centered Hebrew instruction across assigned proficiency levels, integrating Israeli culture, literature, current events, and contemporary issues into the curriculum. As a founding faculty member, the Hebrew Teacher will also help shape curriculum, establish traditions, contribute to school culture, and collaborate with colleagues to create an integrated educational experience. The position is designed for someone who thrives in a proficiency-driven, target-language classroom, can bring Hebrew and Israeli culture alive, and is excited to contribute to a proudly Jewish, pro-Israel school.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Native or near-native Hebrew fluency required.
  • Training in second-language pedagogy.
  • Familiarity with proficiency-based instruction and ACTFL standards.
  • Proficiency-Based Instruction: ACTFL-aligned outcomes; a target-language classroom.
  • Hebrew and Israeli Culture: the language alive in real contexts.
  • Assessment: external benchmarks; growth students can see.
  • Community: Hebrew visible in the life of the school.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s preferred in Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language, Hebrew language and literature, Jewish education, second language acquisition or applied linguistics, or Israeli studies.
  • Outstanding non-native fluency considered.
  • Teaching credential (particularly IL) preferred — U.S. licensure or Israeli te'udat hora'a equally valued.
  • 3+ years of teaching experience preferred, ideally including Hebrew as a second language.
  • Jewish day, independent, or faith-based school experience is a plus.
  • Fewer years but exceptional craft.
  • Jewish Studies sections, Israel education, and schoolwide advisory programming depending on your strengths (for full-time role, but implies potential for part-time role to contribute in these areas if applicable).

Responsibilities

  • Teach Modern Hebrew sections across assigned proficiency levels in grades 9–12.
  • Design and implement engaging, standards-based lessons that promote language acquisition and cultural competency.
  • Create immersive learning environments that encourage active use of spoken and written Hebrew.
  • Integrate Israeli culture, literature, history, current events, and contemporary topics into instruction.
  • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners and learning styles.
  • Utilize educational technology and innovative teaching methodologies to enhance student engagement and achievement.
  • Assess student progress through a variety of formative and summative measures and provide timely, meaningful feedback.
  • Collaborate in the development of a vertically aligned Hebrew curriculum that supports long-term language proficiency growth.
  • Teach for real proficiency, aligned to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines with outcomes measured in proficiency levels rather than seat time.
  • Benchmark student growth against external proficiency assessments (e.g. Avant STAMP for Hebrew).
  • Foster a classroom environment characterized by curiosity, respect, inclusion, and intellectual challenge.
  • Build strong relationships with students and serve as a trusted mentor and advisor.
  • Support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.
  • Encourage student leadership, confidence, and active participation in school life.
  • Contribute actively to the vibrant culture and mission of Davis School Chicago.
  • Partner with colleagues to support school-wide programming, celebrations, and community initiatives.
  • Help create opportunities for students to engage with Hebrew language and Israeli culture beyond the classroom.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Hebrew education within the school and broader community.
  • Showcase student achievement through competitions, presentations, exhibitions, and public events.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and community events as scoped for a part-time role.
  • Help moderate student clubs and activities where scope allows.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with families regarding student progress and learning goals.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across academic departments, including Jewish Studies, to develop interdisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Partner with faculty and school leadership to advance school goals, curriculum development, and student success initiatives.
