About The Position

The City of Farmington is seeking a Heavy Truck and Equipment Mechanic to perform semi-skilled and skilled work in maintaining the vehicles in the City's fleet and mechanical equipment. This role involves carrying out preventive maintenance tasks, operating diagnostic tools, testing, servicing, and repairing vehicles and equipment. The mechanic will inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units and parts, and repair various systems on all types of equipment, including brakes, engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, transmissions, ignitions, air systems, exhaust systems, and axle assemblies. The position may also involve working on hydraulics, cutting metal, and changing/repairing tires. The mechanic will evaluate the status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, perform needed repairs, and conduct analyses to determine the most cost-effective maintenance, repair, or replacement strategies. Responsibilities also include requisitioning parts and supplies, providing emergency field assistance, and maintaining daily records and reports. This position requires being on call for weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License required, or ability to obtain within nine (9) months of employment.
  • A.S.E. certifications required within nine (9) months of hire date and maintain them.
  • Three (3) years of related experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment and on-highway truck mechanics, including automotive gas and diesel engines.
  • Considerable knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, gas engines, and electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
  • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern automotive maintenance.
  • Must have a working telephone and be willing and able to be on 24-hour call; must be able to be at the Municipal Operations Center within thirty minutes after receiving a call or page.
  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion in a timely manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Complete all paperwork daily.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Keep work area clean and organized at all times.
  • Employee is required to supply his own hand tools and storage cabinet/tool chest.

  • Some computer experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair, or replacement.
  • Requisition equipment, parts, and supplies.
  • Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed.
  • Maintain records daily, including preparation of reports and specialized maintenance records.
  • Be on call for weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the general public using excellent customer service skills.
