About The Position

This position is responsible for the support and maintenance of 80 agency fleet vehicles and equipment, as well as 300 pieces of Federal Excess Personal Property (FEPP) and Firefighter Property (FFP). The role involves travel to remote locations to perform these duties. The supervisor will provide direct oversight for 1 lead mechanic, who in turn manages 4 mechanics. Key responsibilities include maintaining a safe and high-quality equipment fleet, supervising the total operation of the mechanic shop, acting as a vocational trainer and mentor, addressing personnel issues, completing annual employee evaluations, updating Job Classification Questionnaires (JCQs), and creating and following through on Individual Development Plans (IDPs). A Class A CDL license is required, and the employee must submit to random alcohol and drug testing.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills including email, Word, and Excel.
  • High level of mechanical ability.
  • Ability to troubleshoot various mechanical issues with a given piece of equipment.
  • Ability to gas and arc weld (TIG and MIG) using cutting torches and plasma cutters and also design parts.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of repair methods and techniques including diesel, heavy equipment, and light duty vehicles.
  • Bachelor's Degree (typically in Management)
  • 0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic Supervisor I
  • Ability to obtain a CDL
  • Must be physically capable of periods of hard manual labor and heavy lifting plus being able to perform these tasks in a respirator.
  • Will be on call 24 hours a day and must reside within a maximum response time of 45 minutes at the shop.

Responsibilities

  • Directs operations of the mechanic in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy duty equipment, and fabrication of new equipment.
  • Schedules the repair and annual preventive maintenance inspections of Wyoming State Forestry Division (WSFD) equipment.
  • Supervises total operation of the mechanics' shop.
  • Plans, assigns, supervises, inspects, and reviews the work of mechanics and other workers engaged in the maintenance and repair of diesel, heavy equipment, and light duty vehicles in the field and shop.
  • Evaluates damage and assigns workers to make repairs.
  • Maintains inventory records on all equipment.
  • Maintains employee time records.
  • Orders supplies, parts, and equipment.
  • Trains mechanics and other workers in the maintenance, inspection, repair, and diagnosis of vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
  • Is fiscally responsible for the purchase of repair parts, shop supplies, shop tools, and equipment.
  • Processes payments associated with purchases.
  • Maintains inventory.
  • Maintains records of repair purchase inventories and employee activities.
