About The Position

Repairs and maintains various types of heavy equipment, small equipment, and winter operations equipment. This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Applicants must be City of Pittsburgh residents at the time of application and must remain a resident throughout employment. A current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License (or out of state equivalent) is required at the time of application and will be verified prior to appointment to the position and must be maintained throughout employment. You are required to obtain a Commercial Class A or B Motor Vehicle Operator's License with the "L" airbrake restriction lifted from the license within one (1) year from the date of hire. Applicants must provide their own set of tools. All employees hired as a titled Heavy Equipment Repair Specialist will receive an annual tool allowance of $700 towards the purchase of all specified tools by June 1 of each year. This is subject to change based on the collective bargaining agreement. The City of Pittsburgh, as a matter of policy, conducts pre-employment and promotional background investigations on all candidates being considered for positions. The background investigation includes, but is not limited to, criminal background, driver's license, and City of Pittsburgh real estate tax payments. Candidates may be disqualified from consideration based on the results of their background investigation, as it relates to the job for which the applicant is being considered.

Requirements

  • Must submit or show proof of all general requirements at the time of application.
  • Must submit a complete application, including education, work experience, a resume (if applicable), and completed supplemental questions.
  • Must be a City of Pittsburgh resident at the time of application and remain a resident throughout employment.
  • Must possess a current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License (or out of state equivalent) at the time of application and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class A or B Motor Vehicle Operator's License with the "L" airbrake restriction lifted from the license within one (1) year from the date of hire.
  • Must provide their own set of tools.
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience in heavy equipment mechanics.
  • Must list all equipment repaired in the last two (2) years.
  • High school diploma or general equivalency.
  • Pass a medical examination before the date of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Out of state driver’s licenses MUST be transferred within thirty (30 ) days.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs, services, and operates various types of heavy equipment ( i.e. , rubber and track high lifts, dozers, rubber and track pavers, rollers, graders, backhoes, sweepers, tractors, gradalls , etc.).
  • Repairs and services various types of small equipment ( i.e. , asphalt whackers, water pumps, landscaping equipment, etc.).
  • Installs, repairs and services various types of winter operations equipment ( i.e. , salt spreaders, plows, electronic spreader controls, etc.).
  • Inspects all mechanical equipment and repairs and/or replaces parts as needed or required.
  • Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are observed in the operation of, repair of and vicinity of equipment.
  • Prepares parts orders for purchase.
  • Drives a City vehicle as required.
  • Uses a variety of technological hardware ( i.e. , computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, GPS, cameras, etc.) and/or software ( i.e. , email, Cartegraph , Microsoft Office, etc.) to maintain records and prepare accurate reports on work performed.
  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
