About The Position

Industrial Metals (2011) is seeking a permanent full-time Heavy Equipment Operator for their scrap metal yard. This role involves operating various heavy equipment, including material handling machines, excavators with shears, loaders, and skid steers. The operator will report to the Yard Supervisor and is expected to have substantial experience, extensive knowledge of their trade, strong time management and organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A strong commitment to safety is essential.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a heavy equipment operator
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license (or higher)
  • Good mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity
  • Quick and attentive learner
  • Strong attention to details
  • Commitment towards working safely and following all safety standards
  • Good English communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally/respectfully with a positive attitude in a fast-paced working environment
  • High level of personal integrity
  • Strong work ethic and ability to complete work in a timely manner
  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision; must be self-directed
  • Team player attitude
  • Must have access to vehicle/means of transportation to report to work as scheduled
  • Steel-toed safety boots

Responsibilities

  • Inspecting, sorting and grading scrap metal
  • Processing, loading, and unloading trucks
  • Operating equipment in a safe and productive manner
  • Complying with all regulatory requirements and established safe work practices
  • Identifying key hazards and using strategies to work safely (e.g., inspecting shred feed, flammables, and heavy iron)
  • Safely starting up and shutting down equipment by following comprehensive pre-operational checks and procedures
  • Maintaining and monitoring equipment, following maintenance procedures and monitoring gauges
  • Maintaining cleanliness of the equipment and assigned work area
  • Assisting maintenance with repairs if necessary
  • Advising management of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
  • Performing other duties as assigned by management
