Heavy Equipment Operator
About The Position
Under general supervision, operates a variety of equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public works facilities, grounds, streets, and infrastructure. When assigned to Utilities, this role involves replacing residential and commercial water meters and meter boxes, locating and repairing water and wastewater service mains, installing new services and lateral lines, inspecting City well sites and recording well pump usage, collecting water samples, monitoring and repairing City sewer lift stations, and replacing and repairing water pumps, motors, valves, and other parts as needed. Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
- Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment used in public works maintenance and repair work.
- Knowledge of work safety policies, procedures, practices, and equipment.
- Knowledge of various types of equipment and proper uses.
- Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations.
- Knowledge of record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records.
- Knowledge of general office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment.
- Skill in operating a variety of machinery, tools, and equipment safely.
- Skill in working efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
- Skill in reading and interpreting maps and blueprints.
- Skill in organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
- Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in preparing accurate reports and statements.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining strong working relationships.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment.
- Valid Class B CDL Driver’s License.

Responsibilities
- Operates a variety of heavy equipment to include dump truck, front end loader, skid steer, forklift, and crack sealer.
- Participates in mowing, trimming, and spraying weeds, grass, trees, and shrubs around assigned areas.
- Removes brush, litter, and debris.
- May paint curbs and cover graffiti.
- Assists with setting up and breaking down special events; prepares and places signage, traffic control devices, equipment, and decorations.
- Cleans, inspects, and performs routine preventative maintenance on tools, vehicles, equipment, and machinery.

- Inspects City well sites and records well pump usage.
- Collects water samples.
