About The Position

Veteran Hiring Solutions is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for an established commercial general contractor in the Atlanta market. This client is a self-perform builder with a developed operator training program and a career ladder, offering long-term employment opportunities. The role is designed for individuals with some experience around equipment, potentially from military, farming, or driving heavy vehicles, or those with mechanical experience. The company provides a structured operator development program that trains individuals with limited equipment experience on various machines, including rollers, skid steers, dump trucks, backhoes, excavators, dozers, and motor graders. The program allows for progression at the individual's pace, starting with foundational equipment.

  • Intelligence and willingness to learn at speed.
  • Reflexive care about safety, especially around personnel.
  • Capacity to receive correction from a foreman with more experience.
  • Reliable presence and discipline (arriving 15 to 30 minutes early is encouraged for faster progression).
  • Some hands-on experience with machinery, equipment, vehicles, or tools (e.g., military equipment operation, mechanical or maintenance work, agricultural equipment, fleet driving).
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites within 40 miles of Atlanta.
  • Ability to pass standard pre-employment screening; this is a drug-free workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Become trusted on foundational equipment within 90 days, demonstrating competency on rollers, skid steers, and dump trucks.
  • Complete daily greasing and pre-operation inspections without being asked.

  • Progress to mid-tier equipment (backhoe, basic excavator) within 12 months under foreman trainer oversight.
  • Master at least two major pieces of equipment (excavator, dozer, motor grader, or full-scope backhoe) within 24 months, validated by foreman sign-off.
  • Become a crew anchor, requested by name for future projects.

Benefits

  • Base pay: $28.00–$32.00 per hour.
  • Overtime pay for field personnel.
  • Health coverage (Medical, dental, and vision) effective day one.
