About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Operator is skilled in wetlands and waterways excavation and works with the Wetlands Coordinator/Heavy Equipment Operator to plan and implement ditch maintenance projects. The Heavy Equipment Operator safely and independently operates, maintains, and transports excavation equipment, including: chainsaws, vehicles, heavy equipment, and other equipment necessary to carry out the control operations of the Project. The Heavy Equipment Operator is knowledgeable and experienced in each of the control operations of the Project, and is knowledgeable of the Project reporting requirements and wetland sites. The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for maintaining familiarity with federal and state wetlands laws, wetlands delineation and best management practices. The role requires strong technical skills, the ability to manage excavation tasks without direct supervision, and a professional presence when interacting with the public and stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Ability to represent oneself and the Project in a professional and positive manner.
  • Ability to walk over uneven sloping terrain while carrying equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform duties outdoors in various weather conditions, in all seasons.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of mosquito biology and knowledge of the Project’s geography are preferred.
  • DOT physical card preferred upon hire; required within 3 months of hire, and to be maintained thereafter.
  • 1C/2A Massachusetts Hoisting License preferred upon hire; required within 3 months of hire, and to be maintained thereafter.
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a valid medical card preferred upon hire; required within 3 months of hire, and to be maintained thereafter. Incumbent will be required to operate a class 1 vehicle with tractor/trailer for the purpose of transporting all Project equipment.
  • Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator (Core) License required within 6 months of hire, and to be maintained thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Performs water management excavation projects, as coordinated by Wetlands Coordinator.
  • When requested, maintains photographic records of projects.
  • Operates, maintains, and transports excavation equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Maintains records of all digging to exceed local state and federal regulations.
  • Operates vehicles in an appropriate manner. Maintains vehicles in clean good working conditions and reports any issues to the Foreman.
  • Operates and maintains hand and power tools, including chainsaws and brush saws that are used in wetlands management.
  • Conducts wetland and larval surveys and submits reports in a timely and proficient manner.
  • Prepares and submits work reports, time sheets, and any additional required paperwork.
  • Assists in Project facility maintenance and cleaning.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent, or their designee.
