About The Position

Under general supervision of the Street Supervisor, this role operates trucks and other general mobile equipment to transport material and personnel. The position participates in all activities relating to the maintenance, repair, and construction of streets, drainage, and alley operations. This includes driving dump trucks and pick-up trucks, loading and unloading various materials, using communication devices, and writing reports. The role also involves mowing rights of way and easements, picking up and delivering parts, using hand and power tools, and operating complex machinery for training or relief. Responsibilities include equipment maintenance and minor repairs, safe operation of equipment, working in trenches and confined spaces, serving on standby crews for emergency work, and performing minor carpentry, painting, and concrete work. The Heavy Equipment Operator will also collaborate with other departments and communicate effectively with employees and supervisors.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of city, state, federal regulations pertaining to the operation of equipment in public spaces.
  • Knowledge of proper techniques and uses of a variety of hand tools and power tools.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, proper care and skillful/safe operation of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment.
  • Ability to learn techniques of operation of unfamiliar equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Two (2) years’ experience driving back hoe, dump truck, or similar trucks.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Possession of Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Satisfactory Driving Record.
  • Proof of eligibility to legally work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Operates trucks and other general mobile equipment to transport material and personnel.

  • Uses radio, mobile phones, and writes reports.
  • Mows right of ways and easements.
  • Picks up and delivers parts and supplies.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Operates complex machinery and/or equipment for training or relief purposes.
  • Responsible for maintenance and minor repair of equipment.
  • Uses good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly, wears protective equipment when needed.
  • Works in trenches and confined spaces.
  • Serves on standby crew for after hour emergency work as required.
  • Does minor carpentry work, painting and concrete work.
  • Works with other departments.
  • Communicates with employees and supervisors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
