Full-Time Heavy Equipment Operator I or II
About The Position
The City of Homer is seeking to hire a Heavy Equipment Operator I or II. This full-time position involves the safe and efficient operation of heavy and light equipment for the maintenance and construction of city facilities, including streets, drainage ditches, and water/wastewater utilities. The role requires adherence to safety procedures, performing manual labor, conducting equipment inspections, and potentially directing traffic. Both levels require a strong understanding of equipment operation principles, the ability to work in various conditions, and good customer service skills. The position is subject to a CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy and may require on-call availability and overtime, including work on holidays, weekends, and various shifts.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement
- Basic computer knowledge
- Good customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team-like setting
- Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations
- Considerable knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles (Operator I)
- Extensive knowledge of heavy equipment operating principles (Operator II)
- Ability to drive and operate equipment under varying working conditions
- Four years' experience operating heavy equipment preferred (Operator I)
- Five years' experience operating heavy equipment preferred (Operator II)
- Working knowledge in road construction/maintenance required (Operator I)
- Working knowledge of construction/maintenance of water and sewer systems preferred (Operator I)
- Working knowledge of construction and maintenance of water, wastewater and road systems is preferred (Operator II)
Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment, including backhoes, front-end loaders, boilers, trucks, graders, excavators, asphalt repair equipment, and road painting equipment, for the maintenance of streets, drainage ditches, sewer and water utilities, and parking lots.
- Follow City of Homer policies and procedures and OSHA safety procedures.
- Bring problems, issues, or concerns to the supervisor, Superintendent, or Public Works Director.
- Perform manual labor as required in the maintenance of City equipment or facilities.
- Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned City equipment, refer defects or needed repairs to the supervisor, and clean equipment.
- Control traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Lead Equipment Operator, Superintendent, or Public Works Director.
- Act as lead man when assigned on a crew working on a given job (Operator II).
- Assist in training of lower-level employees performing maintenance and repair duties, as required or assigned (Operator II).
