About The Position

The City of Raleigh is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join our Transportation department. The Divisions within Transportation Maintenance are responsible for sidewalk maintenance, curb and gutter maintenance, asphalt maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, right of way mowing, downtown cleaning, resurfacing and pavement preservation, bridge maintenance and private development/utility inspections. The 218 person staff maintains over 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks, over 33,000 curb ramps, 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes and over 32,000 drainage inlets. This role is required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency
  • 1 to 3 years' experience in medium to heavy construction equipment operation or related work
  • Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and maintenance
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
  • Knowledge of uses and properties of supplies and equipment
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations
  • Skill in customer service
  • Skill in attention to detail to perform tasks accurately
  • Skill in work order system entry
  • Ability to operate various types of heavy equipment including dump trucks, backhoes, excavators and front-end loaders
  • Ability to navigate roads and maps
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and coordinate tasks with coworkers
  • Ability to recognize potential hazards, and maintain high standards of quality and safety

Responsibilities

  • Operates dump truck to haul crews, supplies and equipment to job sites
  • Operates dump truck with leaf machine attachment during leaf collection season
  • Assists with concrete repairs including setup and finishing
  • Uses snow removal equipment to operate the dump truck during inclement weather
  • Works extended hours on rotating shifts during emergencies and inclement weather
