About The Position

ASRC Federal Advanced Research is seeking a Part-Time On-Call Heavy Equipment Mechanic in Sterling Heights, MI. This role supports military technical innovation by working on legacy vehicle fleets to improve situational awareness, agility, autonomy, and lethality. The position involves converting transport trucks into robots to reduce the need for soldiers to be in harm's way, advancing technology in ground vehicle systems and promoting troop survivability. The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge in test driving and maintaining advanced autonomous transport vehicles, as well as wheeled and tracked ground vehicles. Responsibilities include evaluating and reporting vehicle performance, noting problems, successes, and ideas for improvement. Excellent communication and customer service skills are required for interacting with leadership and customers during testing and maintenance.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Capable of standing all day and lifting 45 lbs.
  • Follow all safety, regulatory, and environmental/hazardous standards IAW ISO 14001.
  • Ability to pass a government background check.
  • Basic/Intermediate computer skills (fill in electronic timesheet, expense reports and use electronic vehicle manuals).
  • Proficient in the Microsoft suite.
  • Experience in the major areas of heavy-duty vehicle systems and repairs consisting of diesel and gasoline engines, automatic transmissions, drive systems, steering, suspension, brakes, electronics, and heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Possess the ability to tear down, build up vehicles and heavy equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Military experience is a plus, not required.
  • Experience with TIG/MIG welding and fabrication.
  • Possess or willing and able to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL-B).

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical services in heavy equipment repair and support in assembly, fabrication, and repair.
  • Assist Government engineers and technicians in the design and development of military, commercial, construction vehicles, and vehicle prototype platforms.
  • Document repairs or installations of new systems and any implications on vehicle performance.
  • Identify any known changes to the vehicle’s performance due to repairs or new system installations.
  • Provide technical services for system integration functions, requiring knowledge in hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, mechanics, fabrication, assembly, physical prototyping, analysis, troubleshooting, and integration of new systems.
  • Tear down and build up vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Perform repairs by replacing worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned parts.
  • Diagnose/troubleshoot electrical issues within a vehicle.
  • Perform preventive and special maintenance.
  • Drive heavy equipment and ground military vehicles.
  • Test drive and maintain advanced autonomous transport vehicles as well as wheeled and tracked ground vehicles.
  • Evaluate and report performance after driving vehicles, noting any problems, successes, or ideas for improvement.
  • Utilize excellent communication skills and customer service when encountering leadership personnel or customers.
