About The Position

Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and service of County-owned heavy equipment and vehicles. Work includes maintaining diesel and gasoline-powered equipment such as loaders, graders, excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, and other specialized machinery. Ensures that all work complies with established safety standards, department policies, and applicable regulations.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED, supplemented by formal training in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field.
  • Requires at least two (2) years of experience performing maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and diesel-powered vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical issues in heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Performs skilled repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive systems, hydraulic systems, braking systems, cooling systems, and electrical components.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance services, including lubrication, filter changes, fluid inspections, tire maintenance, and safety inspections.
  • Replaces or rebuilds major components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic cylinders, differentials, and drive shafts.
  • Fabricates, modifies, and installs specialized equipment and structural parts as needed for heavy-duty applications.
  • Assists in equipment inspections for regulatory compliance and safety certification.
  • Maintains accurate service and maintenance records by completing daily work orders and maintenance logs.
  • Operates heavy equipment and vehicles for testing and verification of repairs.
  • Ensures compliance with shop safety standards and maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
