About The Position

SA Recycling is one of the largest scrap metal recyclers in the United States and is experiencing significant growth. We are seeking hard-working, reliable, and safety-minded individuals to join our team as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. In this role, you will be responsible for the timely and effective maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of various brands and types of heavy equipment. This includes electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical diagnostics, parts inventory and ordering, report writing, and scheduling. This position is based at our Savannah yard but will also involve local travel for maintenance and repair work at other SA Recycling yards. The role requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and SA Recycling strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.

Requirements

  • Must have 3 years minimum of experience if progressing from within the bargaining unit or must have 5 years minimum experience if hired into this labor grade from the outside, on all types of construction equipment as a mechanic.
  • Must have attended Long Beach City College, other equivalent trade school or specialized original equipment manufacturer technical schooling in the following areas: Diesel, Electric, Transmission, Hydraulics, Power (Drive Systems).
  • Mechanics must be able to troubleshoot and solve all problems in all of the above listed categories with no supervision or technical assistance.
  • Must also be able to do failure analysis of all component parts.
  • Must be able to lead and train B and C class mechanics and mechanic helpers.
  • Must have leadership ability to organize and direct project or task work.
  • Must have a complete standard set of tools for any required job.
  • Be capable of preparing all required Company OSHA Mechanics maintenance reports.
  • Must be capable of making a complete machine inspection and write a report of the condition of each component.

Nice To Haves

  • Time standards for job completion or diagnostic troubleshooting may be comparable to guidelines suggested by manufacturing service department standards. Such standards shall be reasonably applied.
  • The company shall either send mechanics to school or provide on-site instructors so that mechanics will be able to stay current with all updates on repairs in all required categories.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts basic to moderately complex diagnostic, troubleshooting, and service and repair tasks for fuel, electrical, mechanical, brake, and cooling and hydraulic systems on a wide range of equipment.
  • Completes routine maintenance tasks (oil and filter changes, lubrication, brake, etc.) on all Heavy Equipment per manufacturer and SA Recycling recommendations.
  • Maintains accurate service records on all work performed.
  • Orders and maintains spare parts inventory.
  • Interacts with yard General Managers to schedule routine or emergency maintenance or repairs.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly working area.
  • Ensures safe and proper use of assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Performs all tasks fully within SA Recycling’s Safety and Environmental practices and procedures.
