DEFINITION Performs major and minor mechanical repairs to automotive and other power driven equipment, maintains and repairs a variety of equipment and vehicles used in Public Works and other departments. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the journey level in the equipment mechanic series. Positions assigned to this class are expected to perform a full range of skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of powered equipment. Positions in this class work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic assists in the supervision and training of less experienced personnel. SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED Receives general supervision from the Fleet Services Supervisor or Lead Mechanic; exercises technical supervision over subordinate equipment maintenance positions.
