About The Position

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic, lead analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, and maintains power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors, generators, weed eaters, tractors, and pneumatic tools. This worker operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges, and replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions. They test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency. This role may direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, and may repair, adjust, and maintain mining machinery, such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling, and cutting machines, and continuous mining machines.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent with training in equipment maintenance and management procedures at the DS/GS level of heavy equipment maintenance.
  • 3 to 5 years, experience in equipment maintenance at the journeyman level.
  • Commercial experience on Heavy/light vehicles.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience is required in leadership, following policies and procedures, timecards, counseling etc.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise mechanics in troubleshooting and follow maintenance procedures to determine repair vs. replacement.
  • Perform cross-level maintenance on commercial and military equipment.
  • Manage and distribute daily workload to employees -experience briefing maintenance updates to upper management.
  • Maintain daily employee accountability and report any issues to the supervisor/management.
  • Counsels/coaches employees as required and provides input to upper management.
  • Inspect, annotate, and order repair/service parts for all maintenance requests.
  • Conduct "In-Shop" functions during work order progress to ensure repairs are to standard IAW Technical and Commercial Manuals.
  • Knowledge using GCSS-Army to check parts, labor, and work order statuses.
  • Good interpersonal skills, allowing total focus on solving problems, maintaining confidentiality, and being open-minded to new ideas. Promote a safe work environment.
