About The Position

This position is responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and overhauling diesel and gas powered city vehicles and equipment, including heavy and light trucks, construction and boring equipment, and tractors.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the techniques, procedures, tools, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of vehicle mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance schedules for vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in the repair and maintenance of city vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in the proper use of all power and hand tools.
  • Skill in the ability to perform tasks that require manual dexterity such as welding and assembling small parts.
  • Skill in reading and understanding technical service manuals.
  • Skill in keeping detailed records of repairs.
  • Skill in the ability to improvise and make repairs in the field.
  • Skill in the operation of diagnostic equipment.
  • Skill in welding, designing, and fabricating parts.
  • Skill in working cooperatively with others.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Must have the ability to drive and operate all types of equipment and vehicles.
  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Three (3) years’ experience in maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Must comply with Missouri CDL requirements and maintain a valid Class “B” or better CDL with air brake endorsement.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE certification or other appropriate specialized training.
  • Hold a Class “A” CDL License with air brake endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance on city vehicles and equipment; changes oil and transmission fluid; replaces fuel and air filters; inspects brakes, tires, and suspension.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses engine failures; repairs diesel, gasoline, and propane engines.
  • Diagnose mechanical defects and issues in wide range of equipment including: trash trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, street sweepers, leaf removal tuck and hopper, tractors, forklifts, mowers, construction equipment, cars and light and heavy trucks.
  • Determine extent of repairs needed and inspects equipment to identify causes of mechanical failure and parts requiring replacement.
  • Repair and adjust engines, standard and automatic transmissions, air and hydraulic brake systems, clutches, different types of axle and suspension systems.
  • Diagnoses and repairs ignition and electrical systems (including computerized), steering and control systems, and hydraulic systems.
  • Repairs tracks on excavators and skid steers, rebuilds hydraulic cylinders, pumps, and motors, overhauls exhaust systems on equipment using DEF with exhaust filters.
  • Uses a variety of test equipment and shop type tools to identify and repair mechanical issues.
  • Responds to emergency callouts and performs repairs in the field.
  • Perform routine maintenance and servicing of equipment, trucks and snow removal equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs transmission, electrical, and hydraulic failures.
  • Maintains and repairs hydraulic cylinders, pumps, and motors.
  • Fabricates and engineers repairs of broken parts; performs welding tasks.
  • Repairs exhaust systems.
  • Repairs and replaces tires.
  • Responds to emergency callout situations as required.
  • Operates appropriate diagnostic equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
