About The Position

This position will support the mechanical inspection, preventive maintenance, quality control, and overall mechanical management of our Class 8 fleet. The specialist will serve as a technical resource for Fleet Management and will be responsible for identifying mechanical issues, validating repairs, inspecting trucks, monitoring preventive maintenance, and providing technical oversight of work performed by internal teams and external maintenance vendors. The specialist will also visit partner repair facilities to validate repair recommendations, repair approvals, parts, labor, and completed services.

Requirements

Heavy-Duty Diesel Technician certification or formal training.
Formal education or technical degree/diploma in: Heavy-Duty Diesel Technology; Diesel Technology; Heavy Truck Technology; Commercial Vehicle Maintenance.
DOT/FMCSA commercial vehicle inspection certification/training.
Demonstrated knowledge of applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) related to vehicle inspections and mechanical safety.
Senior-level heavy-duty diesel technician or specialist with extensive hands-on Class 8 experience.
Capable of transitioning from primarily performing repairs to also providing technical inspection, quality control, vendor oversight, and fleet maintenance management.
Comfortable inspecting trucks independently.
Comfortable diagnosing complex diesel mechanical issues.
Comfortable reviewing repair estimates.
Comfortable challenging unnecessary repairs.
Comfortable validating completed work.
Comfortable visiting repair facilities.
Comfortable working directly with mechanics and vendors.
Comfortable documenting findings professionally.
Comfortable using the company's designated maintenance and fleet management platforms.
Comfortable making independent technical recommendations to management.
Comfortable enforcing safety and DOT standards.

Responsibilities

Perform daily and scheduled mechanical inspections of Class 8 trucks.
Conduct pre-delivery, post-repair, return-to-service, and general condition inspections.
Inspect critical heavy-duty components, including: Diesel engine, Aftertreatment system, Transmission, Brakes, Tires and wheels, Suspension, Steering, Electrical systems, Air systems, Cooling system, Fuel system, Fifth wheel, Lighting, Fluid levels and leaks, Other safety-critical components.
Identify mechanical and safety issues before they result in breakdowns, downtime, or DOT violations.
Provide technical recommendations for corrective action.
Monitor preventive maintenance schedules based on mileage, engine hours, manufacturer specifications, and fleet requirements.
Identify recurring mechanical failures and maintenance trends.
Establish and maintain inspection standards for Class 8 equipment.
Monitor critical components and recommend repairs before failures occur.
Support a proactive maintenance strategy designed to reduce roadside breakdowns and unplanned downtime.
Maintain accurate inspection and maintenance records using the designated fleet and maintenance management platforms.
Document defects, photographs, recommendations, repairs, and final inspection results.
Ensure all inspections are completed consistently and accurately.
Maintain a complete mechanical history for each truck.
Use available maintenance data to identify recurring failures and opportunities for preventive action.
Support the implementation and standardization of the maintenance platforms and processes as they are defined by the company.
Visit partner heavy-duty truck repair facilities where company trucks are serviced.
Conduct on-site inspections of trucks undergoing maintenance and repairs.
Validate that proposed repairs are technically necessary and properly justified.
Review repair estimates and identify unnecessary, excessive, or questionable repairs before approval.
Validate parts, labor, and services against the approved scope of work.
Inspect completed repairs before the truck is released whenever applicable.
Identify recurring quality issues with specific vendors.
Document findings with photographs, inspection reports, and notes.
Provide management with technical recommendations regarding vendor performance and repair approvals.

Ensure that trucks are not simply repaired, but that repairs are technically correct, properly documented, and completed to the required standard before the truck returns to service.
Perform inspections in accordance with applicable DOT/FMCSA requirements.
Identify conditions that could create safety or compliance violations.
Ensure mechanical deficiencies are properly documented and corrected.
Support internal inspection standards that meet or exceed applicable regulatory requirements.
