About The Position

Atlas Excavating bids and builds the work most contractors avoid; deep sanitary sewer, wet excavation, groundwater control, bypass pumping, and heavy underground utilities. We own our equipment and self-perform dewatering, so our estimates are grounded in real production—not wishful allowances.

The role
You’ll own estimates from first review through bid day submission and post-bid scope review, pricing real means/methods (crews, production, trucking, shoring, bypass, dewatering approach) for public and private work across NW Indiana / Chicagoland.

Requirements

• 4+ years estimating experience; underground utilities / heavy civil (sanitary/storm/water) preferred
• Comfortable with public bid environments (addenda, bid forms, unit prices, bonds)
• Strong plan/spec reading and disciplined documentation of assumptions
• Excel proficiency; clean, repeatable estimating habits
• Bluebeam + Excel (required)

Nice To Haves

• HCSS HeavyBid (strongly preferred)
• AGTEK (nice to have)

Responsibilities

• Build complete bids: invite → takeoff → quotes → pricing → bid day submission → post-bid recap
• Perform quantity takeoffs (pipe/structures/earthwork/restoration/traffic control as applicable)
• Price means/methods with field reality: production rates, crew plans, trucking, shoring/boxes, bypass pumping, dewatering strategy
• Solicit/level quotes and ensure full scope coverage (no gaps, no double-counting)
• Produce a clear bid recap: assumptions, inclusions/exclusions, risk items, alternates
• Support award handoff to PM/ops to protect the estimate in execution
