About The Position

SES Civil and Environmental, LLC is growing! We are seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate should be versed in preparing detailed estimates for projects based on construction plans, specifications, and scopes of work.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in construction management or engineering
  • Must have knowledge/experience in self-performance contracting of all civil infrastructure scopes of work including earthwork/grading, underground utilities (e.g., water/sewer/storm), dewatering, demolition, road construction and repair, dam/levee construction and/or repair, and pavement / flatwork preparation.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as an estimator or project manager in the heavy civil construction industry as a contractor’s employee.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to research each pursuit thoroughly, orally and graphically present a pursuit to a group, defend the logic used to construct the pursuit estimate, and modify the logic of the estimate to match a group consensus for each pursuit.
  • Be able to recognize the need for additional support and resources to complete identified pursuit/estimate preparation.
  • The successful candidate will have experience with spreadsheets, word processing, CPM scheduling, and estimating software such as B2W Bid2Win, HCSS Heavy Bid, InEight / Hard Dollar, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or intent is encouraged and valued.
  • Experience estimating federal projects is highly favorable.

Responsibilities

  • Produce direct-perform heavy civil cost estimates including crew assemblies and production rates based on various project size, scope, and mix within the heavy civil market. Estimates should be based on the estimator’s experience and knowledge from working for a direct-perform civil contractor.
  • Furnish accurate and clear quantity takeoff information to provide a detailed list of materials and assess the total construction costs.
  • Seek and analyze potential subcontractor and vendor partners and determine best value partnerships. Obtain written quotes from each.
  • Identify, quantify, and evaluate potential risks, and develop a plan for how operations will address them.
  • Develop a risk matrix and critical path schedule based on the work required.
  • Prepare, seek review of, and submit inquiries to clients regarding drawings, specifications, and scopes of work.
  • Interact with a team of professionals from both office and field backgrounds in preparation of each estimate. Predict questions, concerns, and potential stumbling blocks that may be proposed from office and trade professionals before each bid review, and be prepared to discuss them prior to the question being posed.
  • Complete estimates and estimate milestones in advance so all team members can complete their interacting tasks without causing others to have ‘fire drills.’
  • Support constructability reviews through communication with the project team, designers, and subcontractor market. Document and prepare an alternate constructability approach if the contracting documents are not plausible.
  • Interact with Operations and support operational needs after award including potential alternates, options, discussion of bid-day assessments, and potential site conditions differing from those scoped in the contracting documents.
