The Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning Mechanic installs, services, and repairs environmental-control systems in residences and commercial establishments. The role uses knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipe-fitting, and structural layouts to mount compressor and condenser units, fabricate and install ductwork and chassis parts, and install evaporator units. Work is performed at the Red River Army Depot. The mechanic connects and tests refrigerant circuits, electrical components, controls, ventilation fans, and filters; checks operating pressures and vacuum; tests for leaks; insulates piping; and repairs defective electrical and control components. The position may also involve installing, repairing, and servicing air conditioners with capacities from 15 to 20 tons in warehouses and small factory buildings. Other position-related duties may be assigned or requested. The shop environment is loud and noisy, and some equipment has exposed moving components. The work requires standing and bending for extended periods, pushing and testing vehicles and heavy objects, and routine lifting up to 50 pounds. Regular handling, grasping, kneeling, and carrying are required, along with constant vision and mental alertness. Safety glasses and hearing protection are occasionally required. The mechanic must be available to work any shift, including weekends and other hours as needed.
