As a Heat Treat Technician, you will be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining heat-treat process equipment, including continuous, batch, and induction systems. This involves reviewing production schedules and work orders to determine processing sequences, furnace temperatures, and heat cycle requirements for components to be heat-treated.

Requirements

  • Ability to prioritize safety by demonstrating safe work practices and promoting a safe work environment.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Simpson Strong-Tie Powered Industrial Truck Certification required (will certify at hire).
  • Must have knowledge of heat-treating processes, testing, metallurgy, temperatures, etc.
  • Five (5) years of experience in a heat-treat facility.
  • Must understand atmosphere furnace fundamentals and operation.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to work in hot environments for long periods of time.
  • Forklift experience required.
  • Able to consistently demonstrate reliable, punctual attendance.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiple and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
  • Ability to Work Independently: Follow both written and oral instructions, including safety guidelines, work instructions, and company policies.
  • Able to consistently demonstrate reliable, punctual attendance in accordance with our attendance policy.
  • Ability to quickly recognize and respond to dangerous situations in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Must lead by example by following all Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) rules and requirements and wearing the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times (gloves, protective clothing, heat-resistant gear, and, when required, respirators).

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years technical college – or a minimum of 5 years on the job training working with atmosphere heat-treating furnaces preferred.
  • Familiar with pre and post process testing such as hardness testing preferred.
  • Familiar with performing atmosphere-furnace preventative maintenance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of heat-treating processes, including temperatures, atmospheres, quenching, soaking times, and equipment maintenance, to ensure the proper utilization of systems.
  • Prepare work for processing by loading and unloading furnaces, bins, fixtures, and baskets, and conduct incoming inspections to recognize component types, quality issues, and deviations.
  • Ensure awareness of heat treat lots and assigned markings while safely loading and unloading heat-treat systems to avoid part mixing.
  • Set up and operate continuous or batch heat treat systems to impart specified material properties on fasteners manufactured at Simpson Strong-Tie, follow up on test results, and take corrective actions based on instrumentation and feedback.
  • Operate all related equipment efficiently, adjusting controls to maintain temperatures and heating times, using thermal instruments, charts, dials, and gauges to ensure temperature uniformity in the furnaces.
  • Monitor process conditions to identify and diagnose abnormalities or irregularities in process control feedback versus setups and monitor critical system areas such as weigh-feed locations, transition zones, pinch points, and exhaust.
  • Ensure part conformance to quality and drawing specifications by using instruments such as micrometers, calipers, gages, scales, and hardness testing machines/devices to verify proper hardness and depth of parts.
  • Address system alarms and perform routine maintenance on typical system faults, misalignments, discontinuities, and other issues.
  • Record work output results in appropriate records and assist with documentation and technical devices for recording production and findings, including reject material.
  • Assist with the repair and replacement of equipment during maintenance shutdowns by being proactive and supportive.
  • Report to the supervisor for daily task briefings and maintain transparency regarding work progress.
  • Train new employees in work procedures with intentional and effective guidance.
