About The Position

The Hearing Officer presides over all hearings for inmate disciplinary reports, processes related forms, and monitors the penalty offer process. This role involves overseeing, implementing, and administering all procedures related to disciplinary hearings and inmate disciplinary actions. The officer contributes to positive inmate behavior by applying consequences to negative behavior and provides staff with proper inmate management avenues. The position ensures compliance with Department policy and Division and Institutional operating procedures.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) policies and procedures.
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain and evaluate information and/or evidence to conduct a fair and impartial hearing.
  • Demonstrated ability to make a sound and impartial finding of guilt or innocence and to explain charges, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability shown to synthesize data and conduct hearings in a fair and impartial manner and to document results of the disciplinary hearings.
  • Ability shown to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply policies and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to train staff and inmates in the application of disciplinary process.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated ability to speak Spanish.
  • Considerable knowledge of VADOC Inmate Discipline Procedure.
