About The Position

Flad Architects offers a one-year, immersive Healthcare Planning and Research Fellowship beginning in June 2027. For the 2027–2028 year, the fellowship will be based in either Tampa, Florida, or Madison, Wisconsin. Fellows gain hands-on experience under expert mentorship while collaborating with internal disciplines and external clients, users, and consultants. The role combines healthcare project work (65% of time) with research (35%), including the opportunity to select a primary design mentor and research mentor. The fellow will participate in research, planning, and design for healthcare environments serving leading healthcare organizations, including academic medical centers and large community health systems. The experience provides exposure to inpatient and outpatient settings, healthcare workflows, and technologies used in healthcare planning and design. Fellows take part in meetings with clients, users, patients, the public, consultants, and project teams, and receive quarterly mentor check-ins to review progress, expectations, and goals. The fellow will complete a year-long research study aligned with their interests and Flad’s strategic healthcare initiatives. Topics may include technology and AI integration; environments for cancer care, orthopedics, cardiology, or neurology; physician and staff experience; AI applications in pre-design, simulation, modeling, and design research; baseline and post-occupancy evaluations; inpatient unit and patient room assessments; or transition planning.
