About The Position

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) is an administrative professional responsible for managing the flow of information and clerical tasks within a busy department, ensuring efficient operations and effective communication among the medical team, patients, and families. This role provides clerical and administrative support to nurses and other medical professionals. The HUC ensures unit operations run smoothly by managing data and maintaining a clean, orderly work environment. They act as a go-between for the medical staff, patients, and their families, answering administrative questions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certificate or obtained within 90 days after hire date.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Maintaining and organizing medical records and electronic health records (EHRs).
  • Managing unit supplies and equipment.
  • Serving as a central point of communication by answering phones, relaying messages, and scheduling diagnostic tests.
  • Provide clerical and administrative support to nurses and other medical professionals.
  • Ensure unit operations run smoothly by managing data and maintaining a clean, orderly work environment.
  • Schedule diagnostic tests, procedures, and appointments for patients.
  • Assist with preparing insurance forms and other administrative documents.
  • Answer and screen incoming telephone calls and take messages.
  • Relay physician orders, test results, and patient status updates to appropriate staff.
  • Act as a go-between for the medical staff, patients, and their families, answering administrative questions.
