About The Position

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) provides support for the physicians and team members within the rehabilitation hospital, focusing on efforts that improve flow of accurate information, promoting efficiency, and doing multiple activities to provide outstanding care to the patients that we serve. The HUC will accept calls and record patient information from patient placement regarding admissions and transfers, and enter pending and actual discharges, deaths, &/or transfers immediately into the EPIC system. They will update assignment sheets and validate staffing with schedules, assignment sheets and shift administrator or staffing coordinator, and assist in calling in and/or calling off staff as requested. The HUC will also assist to accurately transcribe Physicians' Orders as per unit policy, completing all order entry procedures, forms, requisitions, and communications necessary to implement orders. They will monitor and/or enter charges including sitters, isolation, and others as assigned. The HUC initiates, assembles, and maintains the paper aspects of the patient chart, admission folders for patients, and thank you cards, and monitors the location of the chart at all times. They participate in patient care and unit activities to achieve compliance with all regulatory, patient safety, infection control and safety requirements. The HUC prepares and transfers paper charts to HIM upon discharge or expiration of the patient. They answer patient call lights in a timely fashion and inform the appropriate caregiver of the need. Additionally, the HUC assists with overall unit appearance including cleaning desk area, microwaves and refrigerators, monitoring and assisting with dirty utility room cleaning, and checking & replacing sharps containers and isolation carts. Daily regulatory checks include refrigerator temperature checks, daily weights, and restraint required documentation. The HUC assists in Death/Restraint Reports with information going to the Nurse Manager and Clinical Nurse Outcomes Specialist. They maintain appropriate levels of office supplies and patient education materials, ordering & stocking as needed. The HUC establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and families. Daily monitoring includes Intake: BMs to report to the nurse, daily lab checks to ensure all ordered labs are completed, and daily input into the food acceptance flowsheet for all meals. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Proficient utilization of Microsoft Office and ability to successfully learn other computer applications.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be detail oriented with demonstrated ability to analyze multifaceted situations to determine appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to work independently at a high level of efficiency; working independently to prioritize workload and meet deadlines given a high volume workload with multiple interruptions.
  • Excellent customer service skills required.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities
