About The Position

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) is an integral part of the health care team, supporting and enhancing nursing area/unit operations at OHSU. The HUC maintains accurate patient and healthcare team member profiles across various platforms, including census boards and call lists, and within the integrated health record. This role functions as a communications specialist, providing essential clerical and reception skills, data collection, and computer entry. Additionally, the HUC contributes to problem-solving and performance improvement initiatives on the unit. The VPV Surgical Oncology unit, specifically, supports teams in Surgical Oncology, Complex Abdominal Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Foregut Surgery, ENT/OMFS, Gynecology Oncology, and Radiation Oncology, and has 64 patient care beds.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • One year of clerical experience in a health care environment
  • Reads, writes and speaks fluent English
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols
  • Basic math skills
  • Demonstrated computer skills
  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the above-referenced knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain patient medical records.
  • Enter acuity of unit patients.
  • Maintain unit census documents/boards.
  • Photocopy and fax documents.
  • Maintain, order, and stock nursing unit supplies and resource materials.
  • Enter billing data.
  • Open, sort, and distribute mail.
  • Organize and maintain filing systems.
  • Maintain logs and statistics related to unit operations.
  • Process physician orders, as directed.
  • Document in Soft Med.
  • Prepare and maintain Care Management notebook used for documentation of Care Coordination rounds.
  • Greet and screen visitors and provide information within unit-defined standards.
  • Respond to call lights.
  • Provide unit orientation to patients and families, health care team members, and visitors.
  • Answer multi-line phones, screen calls, and transfer calls.
  • Schedule procedures and coordinate patient transportation to ancillary appointments.
  • Communicate new orders to appropriate staff.
  • Locate and page physicians and staff.
  • Communicate with home health, SNF, and equipment suppliers to coordinate arrangements for services as directed.
  • Obtain patient signatures as directed.
  • Serve as a resource for wireless communication devices, including tracking badges and batteries, assigning bar codes, adding new users, and notifying ITG of training needs.
  • Serve as a resource for the integrated health record, providing first-line support, reporting problems, disseminating updates, and maintaining electronic health record competencies.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Check for the presence or absence of required documentation and follow up with responsible parties.
  • Collect and document quality data, as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
