This position provides clerical and secretarial services to the nursing unit assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be able to read with comprehension and write legibly.
  • Must be proficient in use of proper grammar.
  • Must have knowledge of: Medical terminology
  • Hospital policies and procedures
  • Infection control
  • Fire and safety regulations.
  • Secretarial or clerical experience is desired.
  • Previous hospital experience is desired.
  • Certification in basic life support (CPR) may be required when the unit secretary works in a department where he/she is subject to assignment as a first responder to a cardiopulmonary arrest victim.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants who have either 1) successfully completed a unit secretary (HUC) course, or 2) have a minimum of one year recent unit secretary (HUC) experience in a hospital setting, will be given preference.
  • As an alternative to the aforementioned preferences, a HUC must successfully complete a Health Unit Coordinator Curriculum as assigned by the Employer within two weeks of hire as a HUC.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out the secretarial and clerical duties necessary for the efficient functioning of the nursing unit assigned.
  • Communicates patient requests promptly to the nursing staff.
  • Orders and charges for supplies and equipment.
  • Schedules procedures and examinations with appropriate departments.
  • Notifies consults when ordered (physicians, classes, etc.).
  • Maintains the patient record and efficiently operates the computer system.
  • Processes patient classification data either manually or via computer.
  • Removes medications from the delivery system and promptly gives to the appropriate nursing staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
