About The Position

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) manages supplies, assists with electronic health records (EHR), and communicates effectively with patients, visitors, and staff. The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) assists with direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse, performing delegated tasks within the scope of unlicensed nursing personnel. Both roles require good judgment, problem-solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement. The HUC acts as a resource for the healthcare team, while the PCA supports nursing practice by carrying out delegated patient care tasks.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age prior to start date.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Basic computer knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to multitask, work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, writing and listening skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Flexibility (Works flexible hours, which include days, evenings, and/or nights, holidays, and weekends).
  • Self-directed.
  • Able to adapt to unpredictable situations.
  • Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from American Heart Association or American Red Cross (or will obtain during orientation).

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of a health unit coordinator program or comparable experience.
  • Current CHUC certification.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant on State of Wisconsin Nurse Aide Registry in "non-expired" status.
  • Completion of 12 college credits -OR- High school diploma/ GED with successful completion of a Nursing Assistant training or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Provides organizational, receptionist, and clerical support to patient care units and the health care team.
  • Monitors and orders supplies.
  • Assists the care team with managing orders in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Communicates effectively via a variety of modalities with patients, visitors, and facility staff.
  • Plays an integral role in communication across the continuum of care.
  • Functions as a resource to members of the health care team and is familiar with multiple Mayo Clinic resources.
  • Carries out all aspects of the job using good judgment and problem-solving skills, strong interpersonal skills.
  • Assumes responsibility for self-development within the role and participates in continuous improvement activities.
  • Supports the healthcare team by anticipating and responding to team requests and patient needs.
  • Assists staff with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care which supports and complements nursing practice under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Carries out delegated skills that are within those functions limited by law to unlicensed nursing personnel.
