About The Position

The Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for providing support to the business to ensure a safe work environment. Supporting WCB’s leaders in the application of safety processes and procedures, they are responsible for facilitating health and safety improvements, regulatory compliance and the development of safe work behaviors and competencies to ensure the elimination of all workplace injuries. With a continuous improvement mindset, they will promote and sustain a safety culture that effectively identifies and takes appropriate actions to promote wellness and to prevent all forms of workplace injury (physical and psychological).

Requirements

  • Two (2) years successful completed post-secondary education where the majority of coursework is in Occupational Health and Safety. Eligibility for certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Technician would be seen as equivalent to the educational requirement.
  • Two (2) year of safety-related experience demonstrating: Successfully supported leaders and/or frontline staff in the administration of a safety management system
  • Conducted research, gathered data and prepared detailed analysis and reports related to safety
  • Ability to effectively develop and deliver safety training
  • Involvement in programs to promote psychological safety and/or mental health including working knowledge of Psychological Health and Safety Standards
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Saskatchewan legislation such as the OH&S Act, Human Rights and Labour Standards.
  • Knowledge and ability to effectively support office ergonomics including workstation set-up, common issues and solutions
  • Ability to utilize various functions within various software applications relevant to the role including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • A high degree of resourcefulness and ability to organize work, accurately complete assigned tasks and work independently or as a member of a team.
  • Good written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with staff, leaders, and other key stakeholders.

  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to travel.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and administration of WCB’s health and safety management systems, including associated policies, processes, tools and/or programs.
  • Conduct basic workstation assessments to promote proper ergonomics, address common set-up issues and make recommendations for further assessments as required.
  • Act as a liaison to WCB’s Occupational Health & Safety Committee(s) by offering administrative support such as scheduling meetings, recording and distributing minutes and reports, and drafting/distribution of agendas.
  • Support the development and implementation of strategies/initiatives by conducting research, developing tools and templates, defining metrics and preparing reports.
  • Support leaders in safety-related activities including the processes for identifying, investigating, and resolving safety hazards within their teams.
  • Provide guidance to leaders in conducting workplace audits, inspections, investigations and the development of injury prevention counter measures according to risk in keeping with WCB safety processes and procedures.
  • Promote Health & Safety awareness through the development of educational information and communications for WCB leaders and staff, facilitating staff training sessions, and conducting safety orientations for new staff.
  • Participate in the planning of key awareness events and/or campaigns throughout the year to promote health and safety by selecting topics, researching speakers and presenters, and sourcing suppliers and service providers.
  • Assist the Safety Program Manager in conducting risk assessments, gap analysis and audits of processes and procedures to identify risks and trends and develop and/or recommend controls as required.
  • Contribute to the development of safety metrics. Gather and maintain metric data and reporting to assist in monitoring legal and policy compliance, continual improvement efforts, and ensuring corrective actions are identified and completed. Analyze and report on data to identify trends and to enable corrective actions.
  • Assist in the management of the WCB incident and hazard reporting system and support users as it relates to utilizing the system for incident investigations, root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Support implementation and maintenance of Safety and Health related software utilized by WCB, such as Ergosuite, travel safety applications, etc.
  • Provide expert safety advice, guidance and assistance as required based on current best practices, legislation, and trends.
  • Support safety-related continuous improvement initiatives.
