Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and/or equivalent industry experience
  • Construction Health and Safety Officer certificate
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in the heavy civil construction industry, with at least 4 years as a manager
  • In-depth knowledge of local, provincial, and national government Health & Safety acts, policies, regulations, codes and practices as they apply to the construction industry
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Fluency in both English and French is required
  • Ability to influence partners and stakeholders
  • Strong leadership qualities with a demonstrated track record of dealing successfully with various workplace stakeholders
  • Results oriented individual with the ability to interpret and effectively manage multiple and competing priorities and timelines
  • Valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Professional designation (e.g. GSC, CRSP, or CSP) will be considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all health & safety matters of the project
  • Assist in developing/revising the project Safety Management System (SMS), including policies, plans and procedures
  • Ensure the compliance with the provincial and federal Health, Safety & Environmental requirements
  • Maintain a CNESST designation and good standing with the regulator(s)
  • Advise and guide the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings
  • Prepare, deliver and/ or organize training programs, including confirmation that all construction personnel have suitable training and ASP recognition
  • Lead incident investigation team
  • Identify non-conformities and make recommendations to achieve compliance
  • Conduct regular site inspections and/or audits and ensure resolution of findings
  • Partner with the project management team to ensure timely H&S communication
  • Confirm that all employees in the group are properly qualified and trained to perform their work specific to safety
  • Review subcontractors’ qualifications and verify that they meet the minimum requirements set forth by the customer and partner organizations
  • Attend pre-construction meetings, progress meetings, and other required meetings
  • Liaise with governing agencies
