About The Position

This position is located On-site in our Bayou La Batre, AL location. The Health Safety & Environmental Manager will develop, implement, and continuously improve site-specific HSE programs tailored to shipbuilding and heavy manufacturing operations. This role champions a proactive safety culture focused on hazard prevention, accountability, and workforce engagement. The manager will establish leading and lagging safety metrics, driving performance through data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives. They will lead and develop the Alabama Safety Committee and provide guidance, training, and mentorship to its members. The position ensures full compliance with OSHA, EPA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations, serving as the primary point of contact for regulatory inspections, audits, and external assessments. The role maintains audit-ready processes, documentation, and corrective action tracking systems, ensuring compliance with Birdon’s Quality Management System and maintaining an organized, electronic database of all safety training and relevant safety information. The manager conducts routine safety and environmental inspections, leads Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments, and identifies and mitigates hazards associated with heavy machinery, confined spaces, welding, material handling, and hazardous substances. They lead investigations for all incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions. The role involves developing and delivering HSE training programs and promoting workforce engagement. Environmental compliance and stewardship, including hazardous material handling, waste management, and spill prevention, are key responsibilities. The manager also develops and maintains emergency response programs and acts as a key leader during emergency events.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Computer skills and competence with Microsoft software products (Teams, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • 5–10 years of progressive HSE experience, including leadership responsibility in shipbuilding, manufacturing, or industrial environments
  • Demonstrated experience working in OSHA-regulated environments with complex operational risk profiles.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or related field is preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Safety Management Specialist (SMS)
  • OSHA 30 (General Industry or Construction)
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or equivalent environmental certification
  • First Aid / CPR / AED certification

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with Birdon’s Quality Management System and maintain and organized, electronic database of all safety training and relevant safety information.
  • Conduct routine safety and environmental inspections across production areas, fabrication facilities, and equipment workstations.
  • Lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments for critical processes, equipment, and work scopes.
  • Identify and mitigate hazards associated with heavy machinery, confined spaces, welding, material handling, and hazardous substances.
  • Lead investigations for all incidents, including near-misses, recordable injuries, spills, and environmental releases.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions to eliminate recurrence.
  • Track, trend, and report incidents to drive systemic improvements and leadership visibility.
  • Develop and deliver HSE training programs, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Hazard communication, Equipment and process safety, Environmental compliance and waste handling, and Emergency response procedures.
  • Promote workforce engagement through safety meetings, toolbox talks, and continuous awareness campaigns.
  • Oversee hazardous material handling, storage, and disposal in accordance with environmental regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permitting, waste management protocols, and spill prevention controls.
  • Lead environmental monitoring and reporting activities to support sustainability and regulatory obligations.
  • Develop and maintain emergency response programs, including evacuation plans, spill response, and crisis management protocols.
  • Coordinate drills and exercises to validate readiness and improve response effectiveness.
  • Act as a key leader during emergency events, ensuring rapid and coordinated response actions.
