About The Position

The HSE Manager is the leader of the Health, Safety and Environmental programs, policies, and procedures for a fully integrated pulp and paper mill. The HSE Manager is responsible for all facets of day-to-day operations for the safety and environmental departments, occupational health services, site security & emergency response team. This includes responsibility for HSE compliance, contractor safety, employee engagement and training, team development and area financial performance. Additionally, the HSE manager may represent the mill and interface directly with community leaders and regulatory agencies. This position reports directly to the Mill Manager and is a member of the mill’s lead team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related field required
  • 10 or more years Engineering experience, preferably in a Manufacturing environment.
  • Qualified candidates have strong leadership skills focused on accountability and results, and have strong organization and planning skills.
  • Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or environmental sciences/management or related degree.
  • Experience with regulatory & electronic reporting systems (e.g., Title V & PSD, MACT) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in a broad range of manufacturing environments and forest products industry preferred.
  • Track record of success in working in a team environment.
  • Capable of managing multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good computer skills in common applications, i.e., Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills; presentation and training delivery skills.
  • Expert knowledge of regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and continuously improve site HSE systems by engaging employees and business partners;
  • Reduce exposures through actively identifying hazards/high risk and work with employees/business partners to implement effective controls;
  • Provide strong, visible leadership in the mill by partnering with operations and maintenance teams to drive and sustain the desired IP Safety Excellence culture;
  • Responsible for leading systems, processes and procedures that promote a positive safety culture, which results in an injury-free and healthy workplace.
  • Develop, implement and sustain HSE programs, policies, procedures and training aligned with IP standards and all applicable local, state and federal regulations, including regulatory permitting and reporting.
  • Ensure applicable HSE requirements are met for new equipment, chemicals, process changes, facility modifications and contractor work scopes to ensure risks are identified and mitigated prior to execution.
  • Provide resources to conduct incident investigations/Event Learnings and develop corrective actions to drive improvements with facility HSE performance and reliability.
  • Conduct field observations, job audits, field verification of critical controls and routine safety inspections to ensure proper hazard controls are in place and that approved plans, permits and procedures are followed. Track corrective actions through a formal process.
  • Track, analyze and report HSE performance trends, utilizing data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and develop the HSE team—ensure professional development opportunities are provided.
