About The Position

The Health Room Para supports the school health services program under the direction of the certificated school nurse. This position assists in the daily operation of the health room, provides delegated health care to students, maintains documentation, and supports communication between students, staff, families, and health professionals. The Health Room Para plays a vital role in promoting student health and safety in accordance with district policies and Washington State regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Transcripts required, OR a copy of your diploma or GED uploaded to your application
  • Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain promptly
  • Completion of district medication administration training (upon hire)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Even if currently employed at Mead354 as a substitute para, you must upload your high school transcripts or a copy of your diploma in order to be considered for a continuing, full-time para role.
  • Para educators shall be required to be highly qualified upon hire into a continuing, full-time position as defined by state law.
  • Completed at least 2 years of study totaling 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university; OR Obtained an associates (or higher) degree; OR Completed and passed the ETS ParaPro Praxis Assessment (qualifying score of at least 455); OR Completed and passed the Master Teacher Assessments (2 assessments, qualifying score of at least 65%); OR Completed and passed the Pearson Paraprofessional assessment: (qualifying score of at least) OR Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council
  • Knowledge and ability to use PCs, Chromebooks, MS Office, and Google Suite Software
  • Experience working with children in a school or healthcare setting
  • Knowledge of basic health care practices and procedures
  • Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with all staff, students, and as a team member, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work with students in a warm and confident manner
  • Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Follow the program direction provided by the certificated school nurse.
  • Maintain knowledge of and adhere to district health policies, procedures, and forms.
  • Provide delegated nursing care including emergency first aid for student illness and injury.
  • Implement student health care plans and consult with the school nurse as needed.
  • Administer medications under indirect supervision of the school nurse after completing annual district medication training.
  • Refer medication-related questions or concerns to the school nurse.
  • Assemble and distribute field trip folders, supplies, and medications.
  • Observe and report student health concerns to the school nurse.
  • Notify the nurse of any observations that may require parent or team meetings.
  • Follow established procedures for health room operations.
  • Maintain inventory of health room supplies and recommend changes as needed.
  • Complete required documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Communicate safety and health concerns to the school nurse and building administration.
  • Follow infectious disease control and immunization guidelines.
  • Notify the school nurse of suspected communicable diseases.
  • Assist with exclusion procedures and follow Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) guidelines as directed.
  • Document results of health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing, lice) in student records.
  • Remind students to attend the health room for routine care.
  • Notify the school nurse of compliance issues.
  • Assist with the distribution of health-related communications to parents and the community.
  • Provide clerical assistance in the school building while also providing student supervision and assisting in maintaining safety, behavior, decorum, and order in all of the common areas of the school.
