About The Position

Reporting to the Associate Director for Campus Wellness Education, with lead work direction from the Senior Health Promotion Specialist, the Health Promotion Coordinator supports key functions of the Wellness and Health Promotion unit. Under general supervision, this position assesses campus health needs, develops educational materials, and facilitates workshops and outreach programs. The Health Promotion Coordinator also plays a critical customer-service role in the Wellness Lounge and serves as a knowledgeable resource for students, staff, and faculty on health promotion topics and services.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of the techniques for collecting and compiling data, and the means of disseminating educational information to the public through various mass and audio or visual media
  • Working knowledge of the elements of health education programming, principles, methods, and practices of health education
  • Knowledge of the concepts of public health principles and approach
  • Understanding of basic medical terminology
  • Effective communication across a variety of venues to individuals with various interests and from varying cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to prepare and deliver informational talks or lead group discussions using visual and other aids and provide clear, understandable answers to questions which are raised by target group audiences
  • Ability to conduct interviews or group discussions to obtain data on health habits and needs, observe reactions to questions, and record or summarize findings
  • Ability to research from a variety of sources to develop and prepare educational materials
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers and the student community
  • Ability to compile, organize, analyze, summarize data, and draw logical conclusions
  • Ability to communicate through written methods to produce educational materials such as exhibits, posters, and pamphlets, letters, and keep accurate records
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize software for the purposes of data management and word processing
  • Keen skill providing excellent customer/student service
  • High school diploma or equivalent or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public/community health education or a related field
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in public-facing roles providing services including, but not limited to outreach education, workshop facilitation and presentation experience
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in health education programming in topics such as sexual health, violence prevention, alcohol and other drugs, and mental health
  • Demonstrated proficiency with software used for resource development (i.e. Adobe, Google Suite, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with electronic health records system
  • At least one (1) year of experience supporting project management, including tracking project progress and keeping teams on task

Responsibilities

  • Oversee functions of reception of the Wellness Lounge within the Student Wellness Center
  • Provide procedural guidance and task oversight to student employees in partnership with the Health Promotion Specialists
  • Assist the Health Promotion Specialists in supervising student employees across the SWC
  • Receive and appropriately respond to questions from students, staff, and faculty via drop-ins, telephone, and email
  • Assist in developing and maintaining effective and relevant office procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality; handle materials that may be sensitive in nature and follow internal protocol for safeguarding information
  • Assist in planning and conducting discussion groups, workshops, open sessions, and other health education activities
  • Provide health education talks to select groups covering relevant current and emerging university and community health issues
  • Evaluate the use of and degree of knowledge obtained from visual and audio materials and recommend redesign if necessary to improve level of understanding
  • Assist in program planning by identifying barriers to good health practices among the target groups
