About The Position

This position will be responsible for developing and disseminating resources to families with children newly diagnosed with a condition identified through newborn screening. Long term follow-up will include contacting families to assess needs, referring to community resources and condition specific resources. This position will also be responsible for performing critical and time sensitive follow-up and case management services for newborns and infants with abnormal dried bloodspot screening test results. This includes analyzing laboratory test results, documenting all actions in the laboratory information management system and coordinating follow-up activities among physicians, hospitals, parents and testing centers. This position provides customer service to doctors, parents and external stakeholders regarding newborn screening results.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of database management and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of laboratory or audiological testing procedures, test results and implications.
  • Knowledge of alternatives/options to standard office operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of case management and medical terminology related to newborn screening
  • Advanced critical thinking and independent assessment.
  • Knowledge of genetics, metabolic disorders, and evidence-based follow-up practices. Knowledge of national recommendations, emerging conditions, and evolving newborn screening technologies.
  • Knowledge of Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.
  • Skills in written and verbal communications.
  • Skills in organization and prioritization.
  • Skills in analysis and interpretation of test results.
  • Skills in interactions with medical professionals, healthcare institutions and the general public including active listening and sensitivity to the needs of the other person.
  • Skills in computer operation.
  • Ability to learn ADHS Newborn Screening Program objectives, standards, follow-up protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to make informed decisions, work effectively with people under difficult or stressful situations.
  • Ability to quickly identify abnormal or borderline results, assess risk, coordinate with healthcare providers, and ensure that families receive timely communication and referrals. These decisions often must be made under tight time constraints, with significant implications for early diagnosis and treatment
  • Ability to evaluate complex laboratory results, integrates evolving clinical guidelines, and determines appropriate next steps to ensure timely and accurate follow-up care.
  • Ability to gather information effectively via the phone or email in a positive manner and accurately document information.
  • Ability to work in a team environment required.

  • Bachelor's degree in a health related field (example: social work, psychology, Healthcare Science, sociology, public health, Nursing).

Responsibilities

  • Contact families to assess needs and connect to resources to support them with their identified newborn screening condition related needs.
  • Conduct timely follow-up and case management services for newborns with abnormal dried bloodspot test results. Analyze results to determine appropriate actions for follow-up. Coordinate follow-up activities among and between physicians, hospitals, parents and testing centers to ensure timely and proper services and care.
  • Document all actions in the appropriate patient record and laboratory management information databases to ensure proper documentation. Prepare reports as needed.
  • Provide customer service to doctors, parents and external partners regarding newborn screening results and community resources. Assist education team as needed.
  • Participate in CQI and Quality Assurance activities to maintain effective and efficient programs.
  • Attend follow-up team meetings and huddles, webinars/workshops to increase newborn screening best practices and collaboration.
  • Other duties as assigned as related to the position.
