About The Position

The Occupational and Environmental Safety Office (OESO) at Duke Health is responsible for developing and administering safety programs for Duke University, Duke University Medical Center, and Duke University Health System. This includes creating safety plans and policies, providing training, offering technical consultation, conducting risk assessments, monitoring compliance, and investigating incidents. The Radiation Safety Division specifically assists faculty and staff with the safe use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices across various Duke facilities, including hospitals, research labs, and accelerator facilities. The Health Physicist role within this division participates in protecting personnel from radiation hazards, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining radiation protection standards to keep exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Health Physics or Medical Physics.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to management of radiological hazards.
  • Knowledge of research equipment, protocols, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of laboratory operations sufficient to review a potentially dangerous experiment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of occupational and educational levels.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to respond rapidly to changing situations.
  • Public speaking is a required skill.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize projects and tasks.
  • B.S. in physics, health physics, medical physics, or related scientific field relevant to the function of the specific division.
  • One year of progressive experience in radiological safety, or other related field.
  • Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Testing and monitoring equipment and recording personnel and plant area radiation exposure data.
  • Implementing the organization's radiation protection standards in accordance with Federal, State, and industry programs to ensure ALARA.
  • Maintaining professional knowledge of existing and proposed changes in radiation protection requirements.
  • Making recommendations and presentations to management based on interpretations and principles of professional practices.
  • Providing assistance and guidance on complex radiological control problems.
  • Providing leadership to technicians through work assignments, monitoring schedules, and resolving problems.
  • Acting as a lead person or technical expert on small projects.
  • Maintaining records with databases and logs necessary to assure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Performing pre-approval inspections of research laboratories and providing consultations with principal investigators and laboratory personnel regarding the use of radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices.
  • Coordinating sealed source leak tests, analyzing samples, and reporting results.
  • Performing radiation monitoring in the field using portable radiation detection instruments and in the laboratory by operating radiation measuring instruments.
  • Keeping informed of state and federal regulations and guidelines relating to radiation health and safety.
  • Working with individual clinical or laboratory personnel regarding items of non-compliance found during inspections and following up on corrective actions.
  • Assuming other related safety and radiation control duties as assigned.
