About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students, and 60+ languages are spoken in our students' homes. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees, including more than 1,800 teachers. KCKPS is currently seeking a full-time Health Office Assistant to provide first aid and medications to address the health needs of students; provide clerical support; and assist the nurse in providing appropriate care and/or referrals for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured students.

Requirements

  • Certified Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant with up to one year of applicable experience
  • The ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems.
  • Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: office application software and basic computer skills.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Bilingual skills —fluency in the primary language(s) of the geographic area and communities assigned to support
  • Maintains communication with internal and external stakeholders such as the Board of Education, Educational Agencies, Federal/State/Local agencies, teachers, other school personnel, parents/guardians, businesses, and the community to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding district records.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication. Includes giving instructions, assignments, or directions to subordinates or assistants as needed to carry out duties.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Ability is required to schedule several activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.
  • Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups, and to work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes.
  • Independent problem-solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Problem-solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines, and problem-solving with equipment is moderate to significant.

Responsibilities

  • Administers, under the direction of the school nurse, first aid and medication to students for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs.
  • Assists the school nurse, students, and other school personnel for the purpose of providing specialized treatments, monitoring medical treatments, and/or testing at the school site.
  • Cleans clinic areas (e.g., sinks, counters) to maintain a sanitary environment.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies to ensure availability as needed.
  • Notifies nurse and/or principal of activities and/or incidents (e.g., suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the child's personal safety, a positive home environment, and adhering to state, district, and/or school policies.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and professional development for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information, developing knowledge required to perform job functions, and meeting district needs.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g., scheduling, copying, faxing) for the purpose of supporting health services activities.
  • Supervises students referred for illness.
  • Employ good communication and interpersonal skills, cultural competency/sensitivity, tactful language, and empathetic interviewing skills to build rapport and maintain trust with students and staff of varied backgrounds.
  • Assure confidentiality and extend efforts to locate and communicate with staff and students in a manner that preserves the confidentiality and privacy of all involved.
