About The Position

The Healthcare Quality & Affordability (HQA) Research & Development team sits within Blue Shield of California’s Strategy & Health Solutions organization, which leads health transformation, innovation, provider partnerships, and affordability initiatives. This internship supports an applied research project examining the evidence base for AI-enabled clinical tools, with a primary focus on AI-assisted mammography and breast cancer screening. The intern will work with Blue Shield’s R&D and innovation teams to assess the current state of evidence and identify gaps relevant to payer decision-making. Requirements

  • Requires actively pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree
  • Requires strong research and writing skills

  • Passionate about changing healthcare and challenging the status quo to advance health equity

  • Interest in AI, digital health, or health policy is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a structured literature review of peer-reviewed studies, clinical trials, and policy analyses related to AI-supported mammography
  • Synthesize findings across diagnostic accuracy, patient outcomes, workflow efficiency, and cost implications
  • Identify areas of strong, mixed, or insufficient evidence
  • Support development of an analytical framework for coverage with evidence
  • Contribute to a short paper, policy brief, or internal briefing
  • Participate in impactful projects during a 10-week internship program
  • Undertake a 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the healthcare industry, and more
  • Be invited to participate in BSC employee events and networking opportunities such as Employee Resource Groups, employee volunteer activities, and more
