The Department of Behavioral Health is recruiting for Public Service Employees who will operate as Health Education Specialists I to assist in providing direct community engagement, education, presentation, event, training, and outreach support for Department of Behavioral Health programs and initiatives. Positions support countywide outreach efforts and perform related duties as required. Assignments may include support for general Department of Behavioral Health outreach, the Office of Suicide Prevention (OSP), Behavioral Health Services Act (BHSA), Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Act, and other Department-wide programs and initiatives. Positions regularly work in community settings and interact with community members and partner organizations. Positions may be required to work evenings and weekends based on outreach needs. Field-Based Outreach: Positions may be assigned to field-based outreach and regularly work in community settings, interact with community members and partner organizations, and assist with events, presentations, trainings and other outreach activities. Operations: Positions may support outreach request processing, scheduling, staff assignments, tracking systems, data entry, documentation, correspondence, material and kit preparation, records, and other administrative and operational functions necessary to support field activities. Storekeeper/Logistics: Positions may primarily support inventory, storage organization, receiving and distributing supplies, equipment and material tracking, preparation and staging of event items, loading and unloading, and maintaining the physical readiness of outreach equipment and supplies.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor's degree in a qualifying field of study
• Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certificate
• Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) certificate
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills as they relate to developing education materials and media releases, representing the program in public, and conducting presentations and trainings on a variety of health topics.
• Applicants fluent in American Sign Language, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, and/or Vietnamese

Responsibilities

• Assists with the planning, preparation, setup, implementation, and breakdown of community outreach events, trainings, presentations, workshops, pop-up events, stakeholder meetings, and other Department activities.
• Staffs community outreach tables and engages community members to provide general information about Department programs, behavioral health resources, campaigns, and initiatives.
• Conducts approved community outreach and canvassing throughout the county and distributes approved informational and educational materials.
• Prepares for and delivers approved behavioral health presentations and educational activities to community members, community-based organizations, partner agencies, and other groups.
• Maintains accurate records and tracking information related to assigned outreach events, presentations, trainings, and community engagement activities.
• Participates in required training and professional development related to assigned outreach programs, presentations, trainings, and initiatives.
• Works toward certification as a trainer for approved Department suicide prevention training programs and, once certified and authorized, conducts assigned suicide prevention trainings and educational activities.
• Provides general administrative and operational support to Community Outreach and related Department programs as assigned.
• Performs special projects and assignments as directed.
