About The Position

This is a Career Service (CS) Health Education Program Consultant position working for the Lee County Health Department. This position is specialized work under the direction of the Nutrition Program Director. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations and provisions of nutrition services of a WIC site. It requires a high degree of accuracy, involves close interactions with other personnel of the CHD, and maintenance of confidentiality. Responsible for the supervision of staff including appraisals, planning and directing their work, approving leave, having the authority for hiring, and taking disciplinary action or effectively recommending such actions. Travel to all sites may be involved in the performance of duties. This position may serve clients who speak only Spanish, Creole, or other languages. It may require performance of interpreter duties, if bi-lingual, or implementation of the Department’s Limited English Proficiency Plan.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of prenatal, breastfeeding, postpartum, infant and child nutrition.
  • Knowledge of breastfeeding benefits and ability to promote, protect and support it.
  • Knowledge and experience performing anthropometrics.
  • Knowledge and experience performing hematological measures.
  • Skill in interpreter duties, if bi-lingual or implementation of the Department's Limited English Proficiency Plan.
  • Ability to provide nutrition education for individuals and groups.
  • Ability to assess nutritional status and develop basic nutrition education plans.
  • Ability to make decisions in a timely manner.
  • Ability to prepare reports, maintain records, plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to supervise people, train others, make decisions, troubleshoot and problem solve in a timely manner.
  • Ability to assess employee work performance.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, and ensure completion of assignments.

  • Ability to work in a noisy environment and in an environment with extreme temperature changes from warm to cool.

  • Ability to handle and dispose of chemicals from a laboratory.
  • Ability to understand and follow policy and procedures.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree from a US accredited College or University in nutritional science, community nutrition, clinical nutrition, dietetics, or public health nutrition.
  • Must be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises staff including appraisals, planning and directing work, approving leave, and having the authority for hiring and taking disciplinary action or effectively recommending such actions.
  • Determines nutrition risk eligibility of clients in accordance with DHM 150-24.
  • Documents services provided in accordance with State WIC Office documentation guidelines.
  • Identifies all high-risk clients, completing an individual high-risk care plan using the SOAP format.
  • Refers all medically high-risk clients to the licensed dietitian.
  • Completes FL-WiSE System data entry ensuring to complete all required screens before the end of the day services are provided.
  • Provides individual nutrition education contacts, adapts nutrition education content based on need of the client using the VENA concept to provide appropriate nutritional counseling.
  • Refers client to appropriate outside agency, documenting referral.
  • Assigns appropriate food packages.
  • Protects, promotes and supports breastfeeding; assures local site reflects a Breastfeeding Friendly atmosphere.
  • Assists with organization and maintenance of breastfeeding supplies for site and issues manual breastpumps per Local Agency guidelines.
  • Promotes breastfeeding classes with all prenatal clients.
  • Refers clients to Breastfeeding team as needed.
  • Completes assigned administrative projects and reports in a timely fashion.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance activities.
  • Serves as the Information Custodian for the Michigan WIC information set.
  • Serves as the Key Custodian for the FDOH WIC & Nutrition Michigan WIC site secure area(s) at the Michigan location.
  • Participates in ongoing nutrition education activities with local agency.
  • Provides nutrition education and general services at Outreach events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
