About The Position

Under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor, this role is responsible for the full interior and exterior maintenance of a 27,000 sq. foot building and surrounding property. This includes performing mechanical and electrical testing, repairs, and routine preventive maintenance of equipment and facility systems such as plumbing, lighting, and HVAC. The position also involves maintaining logs and inventory of repair parts, performing carpentry, painting, plastering, light housekeeping, and landscaping. Additionally, the role ensures sufficient levels and operational availability of supplies and equipment to support patient care, and oversees safety and security systems. A key responsibility includes the safe and efficient transportation of lab specimens, medications, immunizations, and interoffice correspondence for multiple facilities (Brookside, Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, and South Huntington).

Requirements

  • High School Graduate with 4-5 years comparable experience required.
  • Ability to read, write and perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to read blueprints and complete accurate measurements.
  • Strong computer skills, experience and knowledge required.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of power and hand tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Current class 3 driver’s license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Demonstrated safe driving record.
  • Knowledge of appropriate building/safety codes and requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform full interior and exterior maintenance of the building and surrounding property.
  • Conduct mechanical and electrical testing, repairs, and routine preventive maintenance of equipment and facility systems (plumbing, lighting, HVAC).
  • Maintain logs and inventory of repair parts.
  • Perform carpentry, painting, plastering, light housekeeping, and landscaping.
  • Ensure sufficient levels and operational availability of supplies and equipment.
  • Oversee safety and security systems for proper functionality.
  • Provide safe and efficient transportation of lab specimens, medications, immunizations, and interoffice correspondence for Brookside, Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, and South Huntington facilities.
  • Maintain grounds and building exterior to meet appropriate standards for appearance and maintenance, ensuring clean, safe access and walkways.
  • Remove hazards such as snow and ice, and oversee necessary repairs to the driveway and building exterior.
  • Collect and dispose of contaminated trash according to hospital policy and maintain safe disposal systems for contaminated materials and sharps.
  • Perform routine facility mechanic support and general mechanical maintenance duties, including carpentry (repairs, installations), plumbing (faucet repair, drain unclogging), and painting.
  • Provide routine electrical/mechanical maintenance, including changing light bulbs, identifying and repairing frayed wiring, loose ceiling tiles, and faulty door closing mechanisms.
  • Establish and manage preventive maintenance programs and ongoing monitoring for all systems.
  • Work with CBRE for larger projects/repairs and all electrical installations.
  • Order routine and special-order supplies using on-line ordering systems to ensure availability.
  • Maintain par level inventory of central supply within the health center.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment, including clinical and information systems, conducting reviews and testing.
  • Perform minor repairs involving disassembly, removal, replacement, or repair of defective parts and re-assembly.
  • Maintain comprehensive logs of routine reviews and documentation of upkeep and repairs.
  • Oversee safety systems throughout the health center through monthly checks and timely reporting, including emergency lighting, exit signs, fire extinguishers, and fire alarm/suppression systems.
  • Complete routine and special reports and maintain appropriate records.
  • Assess building operational problems and contact appropriate skilled trades persons for expertise when necessary, keeping the supervisor informed.
  • Provide coverage to other operational staff, especially the driver, as necessary.
  • Organize and coordinate all transportation supports to meet center-wide needs.
  • Transport lab specimens to appropriate drop-off points, ensuring safe/secure care and prevention of damage.
  • Deliver pharmaceuticals and medications, maintaining proper temperature control.
  • Distribute mail from BWH and outgoing mail from various centers.
  • Pick up MBTA-passes.
  • Perform periodic delivery of special contracts and grants.
  • Conduct weekly preventive maintenance checks and periodic washing/cleaning on the BCHC vehicle, and service the vehicle as needed.
