About The Position

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), your role is critical in maintaining the vibrancy and positive culture in the Community. Using a collaborative approach with Residents and their entire Care Team including the Resident’s family, external health care professionals and our own employee care partners, you are responsible for coordinating and providing all Resident services while ensuring excellent hospitality. You will model a healthy Community culture aligned with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values. You will foster a vibrant community that promotes meaningful relationships, individual choice, and a sense of belonging for all. You will encourage Residents and their family (if applicable) to actively participate in developing a community that supports independence and ongoing companionship. You must focus your efforts on embracing the Eden Philosophy of care by striving towards the alleviation of the three plagues - loneliness, helplessness and boredom. To do this you must collaborate with the Care Partner team to identify ways to deepen relationships, create meaning, and aid the Residents in being the decision-makers in their lives.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 Diploma or recognized equivalent is required
  • Graduate from a recognized Health Care Aide program with active certification status under College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA).
  • Valid and current (within 3 months) Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluently in English.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving and time management skills

  • Ability to remain calm and professional under stress, pressure or escalated circumstances
  • Being a patient team player – flexible, positive motivator, and professional role model
  • Competent in using the following programs: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, electronic health records and the Internet.
  • Demonstrates an awareness/knowledge of accident and injury prevention; adheres to safe work practices and procedures
  • Ability to push, pull, lift 50 pounds unassisted, and able to walk and stand for extended periods of time

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to candidates with current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Completion of applicable courses (e.g. Preventing Resident Abuse, Customer Service, Infection Control, Back Care, Dementia, WHMIS)
  • Current familiarity with the Eden Alternative Philosophy and the Domains of Well-Being is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide documentation of all involvement or observations made in incidents, safety concerns, audit results, resident and family concerns, care partner concerns and other regulatory reporting requirements. Ensure that documentation reflects residents’ life stories in addition to clinical details.
  • Complete daily required documentation in charts, electronic health record, wound care binders, medication administration assistance, and bath temperature sheets and other care tracking tools / documentation as assigned, to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Tracks resident supply levels are consistently tracked and requested timely from family or appropriate provider to ensure availability and no disruption to the resident.
  • Provides medication assistance to the Residents following all regulatory, community wellness strategy Medication Assistance Program (MAP) practices and applicable Rights of medication administration.
  • Identifies health, safety or maintenance issues, actions and reports issues as required
  • Ensures appropriate implementation of Infection Prevention and Control practices as per Environmental Public Health.
  • Provide impartial support, care and excellent relationship building skills to nurture, understand, and respect residents, families, visitors, and all care partners.
  • Ensure all safe practices are followed in role specific duties including but not limited to the use of lifts, transfer belts, sharps, chemicals and any other equipment or supply that is required for HCA use.
  • Seek information and education from the LPN or designate on any role specific task that may be new or unfamiliar to ensure safe practices are met.
  • On time completion of all annual mandatory education required by provincial regulations and the organization.
  • Participate and engage in Employee Care Partner meetings, daily huddles, workplace surveys or other required meetings and providing feedback on work related changes or concerns that need to be implemented. Focus on building trust and a sense of teamwork to ensure exceptional care.
  • Assist with non-clinical tasks such as laundry, garbage removal, supporting resident attendance at resident events where appropriate, serving and joining resident meals to ensure excellence in Resident experience. Foster connections that promote a sense of community and joy.
  • Actively participates in the response to all emergency codes, medical and nonmedical incidents within the community and provides feedback and documentation as needed.
  • All other duties as delegated by LPN, Wellness Manager/Supervisor or designate.
