About The Position

Health Assistant assigned to Blake School: Hopkins Public Schools has a partnership with area private schools to fund "non-public" school health services. This position is hired and funded by Hopkins School District, not Blake. Employees in this position will follow the Hopkins Employee and Union guidelines. All direct services will be provided at the Blake ELC, Upper Elementary and Middle School campuses. The health assistant will work under the direction of the Blake Nurse while on site. Requirements

  • Two (2) years post-secondary education.
  • One (1) year of health services experience.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Certified nursing assistant (CNA) training preferred
  • Red Cross Pediatric First Aid and CPR/AED Certification.
  • Awareness of laws and regulatory issues governing public health, including rules & regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health.
  • Public health and safety protocols and regional healthcare issues.
  • Nutrition and health maintenance issues for children and young adults.
  • Principles of record keeping, including confidentiality and file management.
  • Computer applications related to the work.
  • Interpreting and applying applicable Federal, state and local rules and regulations.
  • Analyzing and identifying healthcare problems and coordinating efforts with the school nurse to recommend effective solutions.
  • Maintaining a calm demeanor in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team goals, objectives and activities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine first-aid care to students with injuries and illness, and conducts standardized first-aid follow-up procedures.
  • Performs non-routine (emergency) first aid care to students with injuries and illnesses; determines the injury or illness and the proper standardized first aid treatment activity and follow-up procedures.
  • Determines the need to alert parents, Blake School Nurse, and/or contact EMS.
  • Provides care to students with chronic medical conditions as delegated by the Blake School Nurse.
  • Administers medication as delegated by the Blake School Nurse; recognizes and reports suspected reactions to the Blake School Nurse and parent(s) and monitors students as necessary.
  • Uses safe practices when implementing OSHA guidelines with occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious agents.
  • Communicates with the School Nurse, staff, and parents about student health concerns and needs.
  • Maintains clerical records and correct counts on medications.
  • Maintains daily visit logs and prepares accident reports.
  • Maintains and monitors records of student immunization, emergency and health information in school records and correspondence as delegated by the Blake School Nurse.
  • Promotes and supports the overall mission of the School by demonstrating culturally competent and professional behavior when interacting with families and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a safe, collaborative and caring workplace environment.
