This role involves leading the overall Health & Safety program for the Holland laboratory and six regional service centers, developing and implementing health and safety policies, promoting a culture of safety, and serving as the primary safety advisor to management. The position also ensures regulatory compliance, oversees laboratory safety, provides oversight to regional service centers, manages incident investigations, develops and delivers safety training, coordinates emergency preparedness, conducts risk management, oversees environmental programs, and drives continuous improvement through auditing and collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the overall Health & Safety program for the Holland laboratory and six regional service centers.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve health and safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Promote a culture where safety is a core value through coaching, communication, and employee engagement.
  • Serve as the primary safety advisor to laboratory management and regional leadership.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives that reduce workplace risks and improve employee wellbeing.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, MIOSHA (where applicable), local regulations, and ALS corporate standards.
  • Maintain all required regulatory documentation, permits, and compliance records.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and implement necessary program updates.
  • Coordinate inspections by regulatory agencies and corporate auditors.
  • Manage corrective actions resulting from audits or inspections.
  • Oversee chemical hygiene and laboratory safety programs.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, labeling, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and waste.
  • Monitor laboratory ventilation systems, fume hoods, snorkel hoods, and other engineering controls.
  • Conduct routine laboratory safety inspections and risk assessments.
  • Ensure appropriate PPE requirements are established and consistently followed.
  • Partner with laboratory management to identify and mitigate operational hazards.
  • Provide health and safety leadership to six regional service centers.
  • Conduct routine site visits and safety audits.
  • Standardize safety practices and documentation across all locations.
  • Support local managers with incident investigations, corrective actions, and regulatory compliance.
  • Assist service centers with emergency preparedness planning.
  • Lead investigations involving injuries, near misses, spills, property damage, and environmental incidents.
  • Perform root cause analysis and develop corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Track incident trends and develop improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain incident reporting metrics and communicate performance to leadership.
  • Develop and deliver employee safety orientation and annual refresher training.
  • Coordinate required OSHA, DOT, respiratory protection, chemical hygiene, and emergency response training.
  • Maintain employee training records and certification compliance.
  • Coach supervisors on safety leadership and accountability.
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans for laboratory and regional operations.
  • Coordinate emergency drills including fire, chemical spill, evacuation, and severe weather exercises.
  • Serve as incident coordinator during emergency events.
  • Ensure emergency equipment inspections and readiness.
  • Perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments.
  • Recommend engineering, administrative, and procedural controls to minimize workplace hazards.
  • Participate in facility modifications, equipment installations, and process changes to ensure safe implementation.
  • Support ergonomics initiatives and injury prevention programs.
  • Oversee hazardous waste management practices.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental permits and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate waste disposal vendors and documentation.
  • Support sustainability initiatives where appropriate.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and behavioral observations.
  • Lead internal safety audits and participate in corporate audits.
  • Monitor corrective action completion.
  • Develop safety performance metrics and KPI dashboards.
  • Recommend capital improvements to improve safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Partner closely with Laboratory Director, Operations Manager, Department Supervisors, Human Resources, Facilities, and Corporate HSE.
  • Participate in leadership meetings to communicate safety performance and initiatives.
  • Support cross-functional projects involving facility improvements and operational changes.
  • Maintain OSHA logs and required regulatory reporting.
  • Manage Safety Data Sheet (SDS) program.
  • Maintain chemical inventory systems.
  • Coordinate safety committee meetings.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly HSE reports.
  • Manage IVMS program for the site's drivers.
  • Manage departmental safety budget and vendor relationships.
