About The Position

Under general supervision, the Head Women's Softball Coach is responsible for recruiting student-athletes, scheduling games and practices, and making recommendations for scholarships. This role involves instructing players on methods and strategies, coaching student-athletes, and supervising assistant coaches. The coach is also responsible for coordinating with public relations for team materials and score reporting, ordering equipment and uniforms, monitoring the budget, and ensuring compliance with all university, NCAA, and MAAC rules and regulations. Confidentiality of information is paramount, and adherence to the University's Affirmative Action Plan is required. The position is considered Essential Personnel, requiring physical presence on campus and readiness to address functions remotely if operations are restricted.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of coaching and teaching techniques and the ability to use them effectively.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business.
  • Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to travel when necessary.
  • Knowledge of recruiting techniques, and the ability to use them effectively.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, copy machine and fax.
  • Bachelor degree in related field is required or high school diploma with a high level amateur or professional playing and/or coaching experience.
  • At least one year of experience coaching softball at the high school, college or higher competitive level or at least three years experience playing softball at the college level or higher.
  • A valid New York State driver's license is required that satisfies both University and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a motor vehicle.
  • Must also be able to operate a motor vehicle in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit student-athletes for the women's softball program.
  • Instruct methods and strategies and coach student-athletes in the sport.
  • Make recommendations for scholarships.
  • Schedule practices and games.
  • Transport and supervise players while on the road.
  • Hire and supervise assistant coaches.
  • Provide material relevant to the team to public relations for pamphlet preparation.
  • Coordinate with public relations the manner in which team scores will be reported to the media.
  • Order all equipment and uniforms, with approval from the Associate Athletics Director.
  • Monitor expenditures to remain within the approved budget.
  • Operate the program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCA, and the MAAC.
  • Review and apply all policies and procedures outlined in the University's Affirmative Action Plan.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Instruct, teach and assist in the development of players during practices.
  • Actively coach the team during games.
  • Provide accurate data to public relations about the team and its members.
  • Coordinate score reporting.
